Ikrimah bin Sulayman narrates: I recited the Qur'an to Isma'il bin Abdullah bin Qustantin. When I reached Surah al-Duha, he said to me: Say the takbir (Allahu Akbar) at the end of every surah until you complete the Qur'an, for I recited the Qur'an to Abdullah bin Kathir, and when I reached Surah al-Duha, he said the takbir until the Qur'an was completed. Abdullah bin Kathir said that he had recited to Mujahid and he had given him the same instruction; Mujahid said that Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) had instructed him to do so; Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) had instructed him to do so; and Ubayy bin Ka'b said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed him to do so.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of "Ahmad bin Muhammad bin al-Qasim bin Abi Bazzah". He has been criticised, as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis", and Ibn Abi Hatim cited from his father in "al-'Ilal" (1721): "This hadith is munkar (denounced)."
Reference / Source: Al-Fakihi recorded it in "Akhbar Makkah" (1744), Abu Hafs Ibn Shahin in the fifth part of "al-Afrad" (within a collection of his works, 83), Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (299, 3055), Abu Ishaq al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (10/ 237), Abu Amr al-Dani in "al-Taysir fi al-Qira'at al-Sab'" (p. 227) and in "Jami' al-Bayan fi al-Qira'at al-Sab'" (4/ 1738, 1739, 1740, 1741), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1912-1914), al-Wahidi in "al-Tafsir al-Wasit" (4/ 513-514), al-Baghawi in his "Tafsir" (8/ 45-460), Abu Ja'far al-Gharnati in "al-Iqna' fi al-Qira'at al-Sab'" (pp. 398-399), Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (14/ 319 and 57/ 26-27 and 27), al-Dhahabi in "Ma'rifat al-Qurra' al-Kibar" (1/ 175-176) and in "Mizan al-I'tidal" (1/ 144-145), and Shams al-Din Ibn al-Jazari in "al-Nashr fi al-Qira'at al-'Ashr" (2/ 411-413), through several routes from Ahmad bin Muhammad bin al-Qasim bin Abi Bazzah, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la al-Khalili recorded it in "al-Irshad" (109) from his grandfather Muhammad bin Ali bin Umar, from Abd al-Rahman Ibn Abi Hatim, from Muhammad bin Abd Allah bin Abd al-Hakam, from al-Shafi'i, from Isma'il bin Abd Allah bin Qustantin, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Outwardly this route appears to be a strong corroboration (mutaba'ah) for "al-Bazzi". This grandfather of al-Khalili, Muhammad bin Ali bin Umar, has a biography in "al-Tadwin" of Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i (1/ 464-465), and a group of imams narrated from him. But he is alone in mentioning the "takbir", and a group of trustworthy huffaz contradicted him. Among them is Abu al-Hasan Ali bin Abd al-Aziz bin Mardak al-Bardha'i, the transmitter from Ibn Abi Hatim of his book "Adab al-Shafi'i wa Manaqibuhu"; he narrated the report in that book (p. 106) from Ibn Abd al-Hakam, from al-Shafi'i, from Ibn Qustantin, who said: "I recited to Shibl (i.e. Ibn Abbad), and Shibl reported that he recited to Abd Allah bin Kathir, and Abd Allah bin Kathir reported that he recited to Mujahid, and Mujahid reported that he recited to Ibn Abbas, and Ibn Abbas reported that he recited to Ubayy bin Ka'b, and Ubayy bin Ka'b recited to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." This is how al-Shafi'i's narration goes, mentioning the chain of the recitation, but with Ibn Qustantin narrating from Shibl bin Abbad, from Abd Allah bin Kathir, i.e. with the addition of "Shibl" between Ibn Qustantin and Abd Allah bin Kathir, and without mention of the takbir from "wa al-duha" to the end of the Qur'an.
Reference / Source: Likewise Abu al-Abbas Muhammad bin Ya'qub al-Asamm al-Hafiz narrated it from Ibn Abd al-Hakam (as preceded with the author (al-Hakim) at no. 2941), as did Ibn Abi Hatim in "Manaqib al-Shafi'i" (p. 106), and Muhammad bin Jarir al-Tabari and Muhammad bin Sulayman bin Mahbub (in Abu Amr al-Dani's "Jami' al-Bayan" 437), and others also narrated it in the same way.
Important point: So what is relied upon (mu'tamad) in al-Shafi'i's narration is the addition of "Shibl bin Abbad" in the chain of recitation and the absence of any mention of the takbir at the completion. Therefore it contains no corroboration of al-Bazzi in mentioning the takbir.
General principle: There remains, however, the issue of the addition of Shibl bin Abbad in the chain of recitation. Abu Amr al-Dani said in "Jami' al-Bayan" (739): "In our view the two narrations, even though they differ, are both correct; that is because Isma'il presented (his recitation) to Ibn Kathir (directly) after having recited to Shibl …" Similar is the statement of al-Dhahabi in "Ma'rifat al-Qurra' al-Kibar" (1/ 143) and that of Ibn al-Jazari in "al-Nashr" (2/ 414-415), where Ibn al-Jazari refuted Ibn Khuzaymah's statement: "I fear that Ibn Abi Bazzah or Ikrimah bin Sulayman dropped Shibl from this chain." Ibn al-Jazari said: "Neither of them dropped Shibl; Isma'il's recitation to Ibn Kathir himself is established, and to Shibl as well …" We (the editors) say: This is clarified and supported by the narration of Abu Ja'far al-Gharnati in "al-Iqna'" (p. 399).
Grading: On this basis, what occurs in al-Khalili's narration in "al-Irshad" (which contains the takbir) is "shadh and munkar".
Important point: The takbir (saying Allahu akbar) from Surah "wa al-duha" to the end of the Qur'an at the completion of the Qur'an has been narrated as "mawquf" (as the practice of a Companion/Successor) from Abd Allah bin Abbas and Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on them). Reference / Source: Imam Abu Amr al-Dani mentioned its chains in his book "Jami' al-Bayan" (vol. 4, pp. 1741-1745). Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the chains reaching Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) revolve around "da'if" narrators, whereas from the senior Successor Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) it may be authentically established as his own practice and that he used to command it. And Allah knows best.
