Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5407

Qays bin Ubad narrates: I was present in Madinah. When the iqamah was called for the prayer, I went forward and stood in the first row. Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came out and made his way through the rows to the front. With him came out a man of wheat-brown complexion and a light beard (Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b). He looked at the faces of the people, and when he saw me, he moved me back and stood in my place. This weighed very heavily on me. When he finished the prayer, he turned towards me and said: "(O young man!) Do not take offence and do not be sad. Did this weigh heavily on you? The fact is that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'None should stand in the first row except the Muhajirun and the Ansar.'" I asked: Who is this man? The people said: This is Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and al-Hakam bin Abd al-Malik is alone in narrating it from Qatadah.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain is "da'if" because of the weakness of "al-Hakam bin Abd al-Malik" (al-Qurashi, of Basra and then Kufa). Sa'id bin Bashir narrated part of this report from Qatadah and said: "from Abd Allah bin al-Samit, from Ubayy bin Ka'b". Abu Hatim said (as cited by his son in al-'Ilal, 210): "I do not know what this chain is … and I do not know that Qatadah heard from Abd Allah bin al-Samit; rather, Qatadah narrates from Sa'id bin Abi al-Hasan, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Abd Allah bin al-Samit." We (the editors) say: And there is some weakness (lin) in Sa'id bin Bashir.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Moreover, Qatadah's hearing from Qays bin Ubad is doubtful (fihi nazar), because he narrates from him only through an intermediary.
Details of the narration: Abu Mijlaz narrated this report in similar form from Qays bin Ubad, as preceded with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (873) with a sahih chain, with the wording: "O young man, may Allah not grieve you; this is the instruction of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to us: that we should be next to him (in prayer)."
Details of the narration: But Khalid al-Hadhdha' narrated it with wording like that of Qatadah here, mentioning the Muhajirun and the Ansar; it is in Abd al-Razzaq's "al-Musannaf" (2460), and through him al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Awsat" (3006). Khalid narrates it from Qays bin Ubad.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Khalid did not meet Qays bin Ubad (so it is broken).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: With this wording it is supported by the hadith of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) found in Ahmad (19/ 11963), Ibn Majah (977), al-Nasa'i (8253) and Ibn Hibban (7258). He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) liked the Muhajirun and the Ansar to be next to him in prayer so that they could learn from him.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
