Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5384

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote a letter to the people of Persia inviting them to Islam: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Khalid bin al-Walid to Rustam, Mihran and the chiefs of Persia. Peace be upon whoever follows the guidance. To proceed: We invite you to Islam. If you refuse, then pay the jizyah with your own hands while you are subdued; and if you do not accept this either, then with me are people who love being killed in the path of Allah just as the Persians love wine. Peace."
There is disagreement about the time of the death of Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him); I have already mentioned from al-Waqidi that he died in the year 21 AH.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its narrators are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim), but Abu Wa'il (Shaqiq bin Salamah) was young at the time of the wars in Iraq during the caliphate of al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and could not have been present there, so the report is "mursal".
Important point: But something similar has also been narrated from Amir al-Sha'bi as "mursal", by which the report is strengthened.
Note / Clarification: "Sharik" is Ibn Abd Allah al-Nakha'i, and "Abu Nu'aym" is al-Fadl bin Dukayn.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (3806) recorded it from Ali bin Abd al-Aziz al-Baghawi with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Humayd bin Zanjawayh recorded it in "al-Amwal" (127) from Abu Nu'aym with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi recorded it in "al-Ja'diyyat" (2304), and al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3806), through two routes from Sharik al-Nakha'i, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Musaddad recorded it in his "Musnad" (as cited in al-Matalib al-'Aliyah of Ibn Hajar, 4366), and Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (5/ 39), via Hammad bin Salamah, from Asim bin Bahdalah (Ibn Abi al-Nujud), with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (9423) recorded it from Ma'mar bin Rashid, from Asim bin Abi al-Nujud as "mursal", without mentioning Abu Wa'il.
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam recorded it in "al-Amwal" (86), and Sa'id bin Mansur (2482), Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/ 297, 552, 553), Ibn Zanjawayh in "al-Amwal" (131), Abu Ya'la (7190) and al-Tabari in his "Tarikh" (3/ 346), through two routes from Amir bin Sharahil al-Sha'bi as "mursal", in similar wording.
Details of the narration: But in it he said, instead of "khamr" (wine): "They love death as you love life."
Important point: Taking the jizyah from the Magians is established by the hadith of Abd al-Rahman bin Awf in al-Bukhari (3157) and elsewhere: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the jizyah from the Magians of Hajar."
