Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5383

Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far narrates from his father that on the day of the Battle of Yarmuk, Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) lost his cap. He said: Search for it. The people searched but did not find it; it was searched for again and found, and it turned out to be an old, worn cap. At this Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Umrah and had his blessed head shaved, and the people rushed to take his blessed hair. I got ahead of them and took the hair of his forehead and placed it in this cap. So in every battle I took part in while this cap was with me, I was granted victory and help.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its narrators are thiqah, but it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because "Ja'far" (Ibn Abd Allah bin al-Hakam al-Ansari) neither lived at the time of the Battle of Yarmuk nor met Khalid bin al-Walid.
Important point: But this story has been narrated through several routes which strengthen one another.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 249), and through him Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (16/ 246), from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (5/ 34) recorded it (and via him Ibn Asakir (16/ 246), and Ibn al-Adim in "Bughyat al-Talab fi Tarikh Halab" (2/ 3149)), and al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3804), and through him Abu Nu'aym in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (367), from Ali bin Abd al-Aziz. Both of them (Ibn Sa'd and Ali bin Abd al-Aziz) narrate it from Sa'id bin Mansur with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Ya'la (7183) recorded it (and through him Ibn Asakir (16/ 246-247)) from Surayj bin Yunus, and Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (585) and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2398) via Abd Allah bin Muti' al-Bakri. Both of them narrate it from Hushaym bin Bashir with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd (5/ 35), Ibn Asakir (16/ 247) and Ibn al-Adim (7/ 3149) narrated via Asim bin Kulayb, who said: I heard two shaykhs in the mosque, among those who had heard Khalid bin al-Walid. One of them said to the other: Do you remember what we faced on the day of the "kummah" (cap) at the plain of al-Hirah? He said: Yes, we never faced a harder day than it. Khalid bin al-Walid's cap fell, and he said: Look for it, and he became angry. We found it, and he put it on his head, then apologised to us and said: Do not blame me, for when the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shaved his head, we scrambled for his hair, and the hair of his forelock came into my hand. I placed it in this piece of cloth and made it my forelock, so it was very hard on me when it fell.
Grading: Its chain is "qawi" (strong).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): These two unnamed shaykhs are senior Successors who lived at the time of the wars in Iraq, so this is a strong mutaba'ah (corroboration) for the mursal narration of Ja'far bin Abd Allah. However, this report states that it happened at "al-Hirah" (Iraq), whereas Ja'far said it was on the day of "Yarmuk".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: But Ja'far is corroborated in mentioning "Yarmuk" by Abd al-Malik bin Abi Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham, who also narrated this story as "mursal"; it is in al-Waqidi's "al-Maghazi" (3/ 884), and through him Ibn Sa'd (5/ 33), from Yusuf bin Ya'qub bin Utbah, from Uthman bin Muhammad al-Akhnasi, from the aforementioned Abd al-Malik.
Reference / Source: Ibn Asakir (16/ 247) narrated via Ibn Abi al-Zinad, from Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith: A trustworthy person informed me that on the day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shaved his head, the people rushed for his hair, and Khalid bin al-Walid beat them to the hair of his forelock and placed it in his cap.
