Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5382

Khuraym bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There was no greater enemy to the Arabs than Hurmuz. When we had finished with Musaylimah the Liar and his companions, we advanced towards Basrah, and at Kazimah we faced Hurmuz with a huge army. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to face him and challenged him to single combat. Hurmuz came forward and Khalid bin al-Walid killed him, and he wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) about it. He gave the slain man's belongings to Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) as a reward. Hurmuz's cap turned out to be worth one hundred thousand dirhams, for it was the custom among the Persians that when a man was of high rank, his cap was made worth one hundred thousand dirhams.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The name "Khuraym" had dropped out of our manuscripts. We restored it from al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/ 311), where he narrated this report from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain, and the name is established with all who recorded this report.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Aws bin Harithah bin Lam did not live to see Islam; he died in the Jahiliyyah, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "al-Isabah" (1/ 147), refuting Ibn Qani' and Ibn al-Dabbagh, who listed him among the Companions. Al-Hafiz said: "Perhaps it read 'from his grandfather Khuraym bin Aws bin Harithah', and 'Khuraym' dropped out; and Allah knows best."

Note / Clarification: (2) Likewise Ibn Durayd recorded its spelling in "al-Ishtiqaq" (p. 383) as "La'm" (with a hamzah).

Grading: (3) This chain can, in sha' Allah, possibly be graded "hasan", because of "Zahr bin Hisn" (who is Ibn Humayd bin Munhib bin Harithah bin Khuraym bin Aws bin Harithah bin La'm al-Ta'i).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although no one narrated from him except "Abu al-Sukayn Zakariyya bin Yahya al-Ta'i" (his brother's grandson), Abu al-Sukayn narrated from him a "nuskhah" (written collection) containing some reports about their grandfather "Khuraym bin Aws". Among them is this report and another report that will come with the author (al-Hakim) at no. (5504). Both reports are part of a long narration covering Khuraym bin Aws's acceptance of Islam, his pledge of allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then some reports of the wars of apostasy (riddah), then the war in Iraq and others, as it comes in al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/ 267-269) and elsewhere. Khuraym was present at those events, and a man's family know more about him than others, and they preserve more accurately the stories and reports of what happened to him.
Grading: Al-Bayhaqi graded this chain "hasan" in "Ma'rifat al-Sunan wa al-Athar" (18393), and Abu Musa al-Madini called "hasan" another report that Abu al-Sukayn narrates from Zahr bin Hisn (as Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi cited from him in "Jami' al-Athar" 2/ 306, and Ibn Hajar in "al-Isabah" 7/ 646). Ibn Hajar also called this chain "jayyid" (good) in a third report which he mentioned in "Ladhdhat al-'Aysh" (p. 84). So the chain can, in sha' Allah, possibly be graded hasan.
Note / Clarification: "Humayd bin Munhib" (the grandfather of Zahr bin Hisn) is a Successor who met Talhah, al-Zubayr and A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with them), went with them to Basra and was present at the Battle of the Camel. Some listed him among the Companions, which is not correct.
Note / Clarification: "Abdan al-Ahwazi" is Abd Allah bin Ahmad bin Musa, and "Abdan" is his nickname.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/ 311) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (2803, 4168), and through him Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2392, 2520), from Abdan, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the second place al-Tabarani (and through him Abu Nu'aym in the second place) paired with him "Muhammad bin Musa bin Hammad al-Barbari".
Note / Clarification: "Kazimah": a place near which the Battle of "Dhat al-Salasil" took place in the year 12 AH, and it is the one mentioned in this report.
Note / Clarification: "Naffalahu salabahu": that is, he gave him the belongings (weapons, clothes, mount, etc.) that Hurmuz had on him and with him.
Note / Clarification: "Al-qalansuwah": a head covering (cap).
