Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5380

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) announced on the pulpit the martyrdom of the people of Mu'tah, then said: "Then Khalid bin al-Walid took hold of the banner, and he is one of the swords of Allah."
This hadith, with an elevated ('ali) chain, is sahih, and gharib (singular) through the narration of Ayyub, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is sahih. The narrators of this chain are thiqah, but it is "munqati'" (broken).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ayyub (Ibn Abi Tamimah al-Sakhtiyani) did not hear from Anas bin Malik; between them is the link of "Humayd bin Hilal".
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (3757, 4262) recorded it via Hammad bin Zayd, from Ayyub, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Anas bin Malik.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Therefore al-Hakim's including it as an addition (istidrak) is an oversight (dhuhul) on his part.
Reference / Source: Without the description of Khalid bin al-Walid as "a sword from the swords of Allah", it was recorded by Ahmad (19/ 12114, 21712) and al-Bukhari (2798, 3063) via Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah, and by al-Bukhari (1246) via Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id al-Tannuri. Both of them narrate it from Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, from Humayd bin Hilal, from Anas, with the wording: "Then Khalid bin al-Walid took it (the banner) without having been appointed commander, and victory was granted to him."
