Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5373

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) that it was said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): Some women of Banu al-Mughirah have gathered in the house of Khalid bin al-Walid and are weeping, and we fear that they will cause you distress; if only you would stop them. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There is no harm on them if they shed their tears, a bucket or two (in abundance), as long as there is no naq' and no laqlaqah." Naq' means striking the face, and laqlaqah means shrieking and wailing.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih (authentic), as al-Nawawi said in "Khulasat al-Ahkam" (3778).
Note / Clarification: "Ishaq bin Ibrahim" refers to: al-Dabari, "al-A'mash" refers to: Sulayman bin Mihran, and "Abu Wa'il" refers to: Shaqiq bin Salamah al-Asadi.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari cited this athar (Companion's report) in his "Sahih" before hadith (1291), "mu'allaq" in a decisive form (sighat al-jazm).
Reference / Source: It is in "Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq" (6685), except that he explained "al-laqlaqah" but did not explain "al-naq'".

Grading: Ibn Hajar said: "This is mawquf (a Companion's statement) and sahih."
Reference / Source: Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam recorded it in "Gharib al-Hadith" (3/ 274) through the route of Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir; Abu Ubayd (3/ 274) and Ibn Asakir (16/ 278) through the route of al-Hasan bin Amr al-Fuqaymi; and Ibn al-Mubarak in "al-Jihad" (53), Ibn Sa'd (5/ 44), Abu Arubah al-Harrani in "al-Muntaqa min Kitab al-Tabaqat" (p. 30), Ibn Asakir (16/ 269) and Ibn al-Adim (7/ 3162) through the route of Asim bin Bahdalah. All three (Mansur, al-Hasan and Asim) narrate from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Asim bin Bahdalah added in some of his routes: "When Khalid died, Umar went out in his funeral procession." Asim is alone in this addition among the students of Abu Wa'il, who are better at memorization and more trustworthy than Asim. Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 610) that Habib bin Abi Thabit also narrated it from Abu Wa'il, and he mentioned his wording, which does not contain what Asim bin Bahdalah mentioned.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): What appears in the hadith of Ma'mar (from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il), that "some women of Banu al-Mughirah gathered in the house of Khalid bin al-Walid and wept", does not support the statement of Asim bin Bahdalah. For Khalid had a house in Madinah, just as a number of Companions had houses in Madinah despite residing in Syria or Iraq, so this does not require that he died in Madinah. Rather, Khalid's mother was in Madinah, as indicated by the narration of Yazid bin al-Asamm (Ibn Sa'd 5/ 44), so it appears that she was in the house of her son Khalid.
Important point: Otherwise, the view of the majority of scholars, that Khalid died in Syria, in Hims, is the well-known one (as Ibn Kathir said), and indeed it is the correct one (as al-Dhahabi said).
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (2401) through the route of Asim bin Abi al-Najud (Ibn Bahdalah) as "mursal"; it does not have Abu Wa'il in it, nor does it mention that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out in his funeral procession.
Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur (as in "Fath al-Bari" 4/ 613) and Ibn Shabbah in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (3/ 796) recorded it through the route of Ibrahim al-Nakha'i as "mursal".
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah (trustworthy), and it too does not contain what Asim bin Bahdalah said.
