Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 536

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and combed through his beard from underneath with his fingers, and said: "This is what my Lord has commanded me."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This chain is "hasan", in sha' Allah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin Wahb is corroborated (mutaba'ah) by Muhammad bin 'Abd Allah bin Khalid al-Saffar (as found in Imam al-Dhuhli's "'Ilal Hadith al-Zuhri", as cited in Ibn al-Qattan's "al-Wahm wa al-Iham" 5/ 220), and also by Kathir bin 'Ubayd al-Hadhdha' (in al-Tabarani's "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" 1691). Both of these narrators are "saduq" (truthful), and they narrated it from Muhammad bin Harb with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yazid bin 'Abd Rabbih contradicted these narrators and narrated it from Muhammad bin Harb, from al-Zubaydi, with the words of a "balagh" (i.e. that this report reached al-Zubaydi). Although Yazid is thiqah, and according to Imam al-Dhuhli his narration is the preserved (mahfuz) one while that of al-Saffar is weak, our position is that al-Saffar is not alone in it; rather, two other narrators have corroborated him.
Reference / Source: A similar narration was recorded by Abu Dawud (145) and Ibn Majah (431) through two routes from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is scholarly criticism (jarh) of both of these chains, and the chain of Imam Ibn Majah is even weaker.
