Note / Clarification: (3) In the manuscripts this word was corrupted into "ittafaqa".
Note / Clarification: (4) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it was corrupted into "Zurayq".
Note / Clarification: (5) The word "Ibn" had dropped out of our manuscripts; we have restored it from "Ithaf al-Maharah" of al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (16238).
Note / Clarification: (6) See the footnote given at the beginning of the biography.
Grading: (1) This chain can possibly be graded "hasan" (good).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Amr bin al-Harith (Ibn al-Dahhak al-Himsi) and Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin al-Ala' bin Zibriq are both "hasan al-hadith" (good in hadith), as explained at number (907). We could not find any biography of Amr bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim, but three narrators narrated from him (as appears in the chains), among them al-Tabarani, who narrated from him extensively in his books. Such a narrator can possibly be graded hasan in corroborations and supporting reports. Fudayl bin Fadalah (al-Hawzani al-Shami) was narrated from by more than one person, and no one except Ibn Hibban is reported to have declared him trustworthy.
Note / Clarification: "Ibn A'idh" refers to: Abd al-Rahman bin A'idh al-Thumali.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (8/ 164) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (17/ 1007) and in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1874), and through him Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (47/ 266-267), from Amr bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (17/ 1007) and al-Bayhaqi (8/ 164) recorded it through several routes from Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin al-Ala' bin Zibriq. Al-Bukhari mentioned it "mu'allaq" in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/ 18-19) from Ishaq, abridged to the hadith of Iyad about sincere advice (nasihah).
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim recorded it in "al-Ahad wa al-Mathani" (876) and in "al-Sunnah" (1098) from Muhammad bin Awf al-Ta'i, from Abd al-Hamid bin Ibrahim al-Hadrami al-Himsi, from Abdullah bin Salim.
Grading: This Abd al-Hamid bin Ibrahim is "da'if" (weak) and of no standing (laysa bi-shay').
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Asim recorded it in "al-Sunnah" (1097) and Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (47/ 266) through the route of Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ayyash; and Abu Nu'aym in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (5425) through the route of Abd al-Wahhab bin al-Dahhak. Both of them narrate from Isma'il bin Ayyash, from Damdam bin Zur'ah, from Shurayh bin Ubayd, from Jubayr bin Nufayr.
Grading: Abd al-Wahhab bin al-Dahhak is "matruk" (abandoned) and accused of lying. And about Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ayyash, Abu Dawud said: "He was not that (reliable)."
Reference / Source: Ahmad (24/ 15333) recorded it through the route of Safwan bin Amr, from Shurayh bin Ubayd al-Hadrami, as "mursal"; he said: "Iyad bin Ghanm, the governor of Dara, flogged" (and then he mentioned it).
Grading: Its narrators are acceptable, except that its defect ('illah) is "irsal" (being mursal), since Shurayh did not meet Iyad or Hisham, and he is "kathir al-irsal" (one who often narrates mursal).
Reference / Source: Its first part was recorded by Ahmad (24/ 15335 and 25/ 5846), Muslim (2613), Abu Dawud (3045), al-Nasa'i (8718) and Ibn Hibban (5612) through two routes from Urwah bin al-Zubayr, from Hisham bin Hakim bin Hizam: that he found Iyad bin Ghanm, while he was governor of Hims, making some people of the Nabataeans stand in the sun over the payment of the jizyah. Hisham said to him: "What is this, O Iyad?! I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Indeed Allah will punish those who torment people in this world.'" This is the wording of Ahmad (in the first place) and Ibn Hibban. The wording of the rest is similar, but they did not explicitly name Iyad bin Ghanm in their narration.
Note / Clarification: "Dara": a town between Nasibin and Mardin. In some sources it has been corrupted into "Darayya".
