Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr said: Abu Yahya Usayd bin Hudayr (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 20 AH. He had taken part in the Pledge of al-Aqabah and was then appointed a naqib (chief representative). Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) led his funeral prayer in Madinah, and he was buried in al-Baqi'. He had two kunyahs: Abu Yahya and Abu Husayn. His father's title was "Hudayr al-Kata'ib" (Hudayr of the battalions), and Usayd had no offspring.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (2) In the printed edition it is "Abu Hudayr", which is one view narrated about the kunyah of Usayd bin Hudayr. But what is in our manuscripts is what Ibn al-Hadhdha', Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi and al-Tabari mentioned (as al-Hafiz Mughultay quoted from them in "Ikmal Tahdhib al-Kamal" 2/ 226). Ibn Mandah also mentioned it in "Fath al-Bab" (2304) and al-Dhahabi in "al-Muqtana" (1615), but al-Dhahabi said: "Abu Hudayr seems more likely."
3/ 558. Note / Clarification: (3) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is "al-Katib", while what has been adopted in the text is from (S) and (M), and this agrees with the books of sirah, biographies and history that mention Hudayr (the father of Usayd), such as "al-Maghazi" of al-Waqidi (1/ 303) and "Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd" (3/ 558).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) The statement that "he left no descendants (lam yu'qib)" is problematized by what is established in "Musnad Ahmad" (18/ 11766) and "Sahih Muslim" (796) from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, where Usayd mentions his son "Yahya" in a report he narrated. Important point: Perhaps this Yahya died without leaving descendants, so that no line of Usayd remained after him, and Allah knows best.
