Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5340

Muhammad bin Umar said: The kunyah of Usayd bin Hudayr bin Simak was Abu Yahya; he was also called Abu al-Husayn and Abu Bahr. Usayd was counted, both in the Jahiliyyah and in Islam, among the most honoured of his people, a man of intellect and sound judgement. He was counted among the "Kamalah" (that is, those who knew writing, swimming and archery). His father, Hudayr al-Kata'ib, was likewise before him; he was the chief of the Aws on the day of the Battle of Bu'ath and was killed on that day. According to all the reports, Usayd was one of the seventy of the Ansar who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of al-Aqabah, and he was one of the twelve nuqaba' (chief representatives). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Usayd bin Hudayr and Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with them both). Usayd could not take part in the Battle of Badr; besides him, other senior Companions and nuqaba' also stayed behind from Badr, because they did not think that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would face any war or fighting. However, he took part in the Battle of Uhud and received seven wounds on that day, and when the people scattered he stood firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He took part in the Battle of al-Khandaq and all the battles alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) In the printed edition it is "al-katabah" instead of "al-kamalah", which is a corruption (tahrif), even though Hudayr was one of those who knew how to write. Ibn Sa'd said in "al-Tabaqat" (3/ 558): "Usayd used to write Arabic in the Jahiliyyah, when writing was rare among the Arabs. He was also skilled in swimming and archery. In the Jahiliyyah, a person in whom these qualities were combined was called 'al-Kamil' (the complete one), and they had all been combined in Usayd."

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Waqidi's statement that Usayd was not present at Badr is agreed with by Muhammad bin Ishaq (see: "Sirat Ibn Hisham" 1/ 454-455). But Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 45) that others besides Muhammad bin Ishaq say that he was present at Badr. We (the editors) say: Ibn al-Sakan stated decisively that he was present at Badr (as quoted by al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "al-Isabah" 1/ 83). Khalifah bin Khayyat (as in Ibn Asakir 9/ 78) and a group of others (from whom al-Waqidi narrated it, as in Ibn Asakir 9/ 95-96) also affirmed it. Al-Daraqutni likewise affirmed it in "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" (2/ 554), among others. Allah knows best. Ibn Asakir (9/ 77) denied his presence at Badr on the basis of a report that cannot be relied upon.
