Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5334

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of his house at midday and saw Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting in the mosque. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O Abu Bakr! What has brought you out of your house at this hour?" He said: O Messenger of Allah! The same need (hunger) that brought you out. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O son of al-Khattab! What has brought you out?" He too said the same as Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had said. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat with the two of them and talked, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have the strength for us to go to these date-palm orchards" (he (peace and blessings be upon him) pointed towards the houses of the Ansar) "so that, if Allah wills, we may find food, drink and shade?" We said: Yes. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set off, and we went along with him (peace and blessings be upon him).
Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Amir bin Hidhyam (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to other supporting chains).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This particular chain is "da'if" (weak), because of the weakness of Abu Khalaf Abdullah bin Isa (al-Kharraz).
Important point: However, this story is well known: Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated it (it will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number 7355), and Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also narrated it (it will come at number 7358). Al-Uqayli said in "al-Du'afa'" (823), after recording this hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): "Hadiths have been narrated on this topic through routes other than this one, with sound (acceptable) chains."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Most of those who narrated this hadith of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) with this chain add in its chain the statement of Ibn Abbas that "he heard Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say", then they mention the whole story and make it part of the Musnad (narrations) of Umar bin al-Khattab. Ibn Sa'id declared that to be correct and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar agreed with him, as Ibn Allan quoted from the two of them in "al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyyah" (5/ 233).
Details of the narration: The complete version of this hadith, which the author (al-Hakim) has abridged here, contains the story of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan hosting the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), and feeding them half-ripe dates (busr), fresh ripe dates (rutab) and meat; then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for good for him, and later repaid his hospitality by giving him a servant from the captives. This is similar to what is in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah which will come later with the author.
Important point: The author's abridging it here was not appropriate, especially since he cited it among the virtues of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan, so the context required that it be mentioned in full.
Reference / Source: It was recorded in full by al-Bazzar (205), Abu Ya'la (250), Ibn Khuzaymah (as in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" of al-Bayhaqi 1/ 362), al-Uqayli in "al-Du'afa'" (823), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 8/ 495), al-Tabarani in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (19/ 568), Ibn Adi in "al-Kamil" (4/ 252), Abu Tahir al-Mukhallis in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (338), Abu Ishaq al-Tha'labi in his "Tafsir" (10/ 279), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (1/ 362), Diya' al-Din al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (1/ 179) and al-Mizzi in "al-Muntaqa min Fawa'id Abi Hamid al-Hadrami" (50), through several routes from Abu Khalaf Abdullah bin Isa al-Khazzaz, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Most of them add in the chain that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) heard Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saying it, and they make it a narration from the Musnad of Umar bin al-Khattab.
Reference / Source: Parts of the story of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan will also come later with the author (al-Hakim) at numbers (7356) and (7767), from Muhammad bin Yazid al-Adl as well.
Reference / Source: There will also come later with the author, at numbers (7261) and (7357), through the route of Abdullah bin Kaysan al-Marwazi, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, a narration similar to the story of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan, but mentioning "Abu Ayyub al-Ansari" as the one who hosted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them), and it contains some additions.
Grading: This Abdullah bin Kaysan is "da'if" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Hibban, and likewise al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Nata'ij al-Afkar", regarded this narration of his, and the additions in it that are not in the story of Abu al-Haytham, as "gharib" (strange/unusual). Ibn Allan quoted this from him in "al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyyah" (5/ 232).
