حدثنا علي بن حَمْشاذَ، حدثنا محمد بن غالب، حدثنا أبو حذُيفة، حدثنا عُمَارة بن زاذان، عن ثابت، عن أنس، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "السُّباقُ أربعةٌ: أنا سابِقُ العربِ، وسلمانُ سابِقُ فارسَ، وبلالٌ سابِقُ الحَبشةِ، وصهيبٌ سابِقُ الرُّومِ" (1). تفرَّد به عُمَارةُ بن زاذان عن ثابت.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The forerunners (the vanguard of Islam) are four: I am the forerunner of the Arabs, Salman of Persia, Bilal of Abyssinia, and Suhayb is the forerunner of the Romans." Umarah bin Zadhan is alone in narrating this hadith from Thabit.

(1) إسناده ضعيف من أجل عمارة بن زاذان، فإنَّ له عن ثابت عن أنس أحاديث مناكير كما قال الإمام أحمد، ووهّاه الذهبي في "تلخيص المستدرك" عند الرواية الآتية لهذا الحديث برقم (5820) أبو حذيفة: هو موسى بن مسعود النَّهْدي، وثابت: هو ابن أسلم البُناني.
Grading: (1) Its chain is weak because of "'Umarah bin Zadhan".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For his hadiths from Thabit from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) are "munkar", as Imam Ahmad said. Al-Dhahabi declared him feeble (wahin) in "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" at hadith number (5820).
Note / Clarification: "Abu Hudhayfah" refers to Musa bin Mas'ud al-Nahdi, and "Thabit" refers to Ibn Aslam al-Bunani.
وأخرجه البزار (6901)، ومن طريقه أبو الفضل العراقيُّ في "محجة القرب إلى محبة العرب" (271) عن عبدة بن عبد الله، وابن الأثير في "أسد الغابة" 2/ 419، وابن العَديم في "تاريخ حلب" 4/ 1840 من طريق إسحاق بن الحسن الحربي، كلاهما عن أبي حذيفة موسى بن مسعود، بهذا الإسناد. وقال العراقي: حديث حسن!
Reference / Source: Al-Bazzar (6901) recorded it - and by way of him Abu al-Fadl al-'Iraqi in "Mahajjat al-Qurab" (271) - from 'Abdah bin 'Abd Allah, and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (2/ 419) and Ibn al-'Adim in "Tarikh Halab" (4/ 1840) by way of Ishaq bin al-Hasan al-Harbi. Both of them ('Abdah and Ishaq) narrate it from Abu Hudhayfah Musa bin Mas'ud with this chain.
Grading: Al-'Iraqi called it "hasan"!
وفي الباب عن أبي أمامة الباهلي عند ابن أبي حاتم في "العلل" (2577)، والطبراني في "الكبير" (8526)، وفي "الأوسط" (3036)، وفي "الصغير" (289)، وفي "مسند الشاميين" (827)، وابن عدي في "الكامل" 2/ 75، وابن الفاخر في "موجبات الجنة" (336) و (337)، وابن عساكر في "تاريخ دمشق" 10/ 449 و 24/ 220، والعراقي في "محجة القرب" (270). وإسناده ضعيف، فيه عطية بن بقية بن الوليد عن أبيه، وهما غير ثقتين وقال أبو حاتم وأبو زرعة فيما نقله عنهما ابن أبي حاتم حديث باطل لا أصل له بذا الإسناد.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ibn Abi Hatim's "al-'Ilal" (2577), al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (8526), "al-Awsat" (3036), "al-Saghir" (289) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (827), Ibn 'Adi's "al-Kamil" (2/ 75), Ibn al-Fakhir's "Mujibat al-Jannah" (336, 337), Ibn 'Asakir (10/ 449 and 24/ 220) and al-'Iraqi's "Mahajjat al-Qurab" (270).
Grading: Its chain is "weak"; in it 'Atiyyah bin Baqiyyah bin al-Walid narrates from his father, and neither of them is trustworthy. Abu Hatim and Abu Zur'ah said: "This hadith is false (batil) and has no basis with this chain."
وروي عن قتادة بن دعامة مرسلًا عند الطبري في "تفسيره" 22/ 96، قال: ذُكر لنا أنَّ النبي ﷺ: قال … فذكره. ورجاله ثقات.
Reference / Source: It is narrated from Qatadah bin Di'amah in "mursal" form in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (22/ 96); he said: "It was mentioned to us that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said" (and he mentioned it).
Grading: Its narrators are trustworthy (thiqah).
وروي من مرسل الحسنِ بن أبي الحسن البَصري عند معمر بن راشد في "جامعه" (20432)، وابن أبي شيبة 11/ 478، وابن سعد في "الطبقات" 1/ 5، وأحمد بن حنبل في "فضائل الصحابة" (1737)، ورجاله ثقات أيضًا. لكن اقتصر ابن سعد على وقال ﷺ: "أنا سابق العرب".
Reference / Source: It is narrated from the "mursal" narration of al-Hasan al-Basri in Ma'mar bin Rashid's "al-Jami'" (20432), Ibn Abi Shaybah (11/ 478), Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (1/ 5) and Ahmad bin Hanbal's "Fada'il al-Sahabah" (1737).
Grading: Its narrators are also trustworthy (thiqah).
Details of the narration: But Ibn Sa'd confined himself to these words: "And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I am the forerunner of the Arabs.'"
