Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This narration is "weak", because of "inconsistency" (idtirab) in its chain, even though its narrators here are trustworthy.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is disagreement from al-Awza'i ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Amr) about its chain, as will be explained. Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": "So he said: the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); and I do not know this."
Note / Clarification: "Abu 'Ammar" refers to Shaddad bin 'Abd Allah.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (10/ 462) by way of Abu Salih 'Abd Allah bin Salih, from Mu'awiyah bin Salih, from al-Awza'i, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in "mu'dal" form, with the wording: "The best of the black people are four …", and he also mentioned al-Najashi. In it he did not say of Mihja' that he was the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (21/ 67) from al-'Abbas bin al-Walid bin Mazyad al-'Udhri, from his father, from al-Awza'i, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Harmalah, who said: "A black man came to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib asking (something), and Sa'id said to him: 'Do not grieve because you are black, for among the best of people were three black people: Bilal, Mihja' (the freed slave of 'Umar bin al-Khattab) and Luqman the Wise …'"
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here Mihja' is described as the freed slave of 'Umar bin al-Khattab. This narration is a statement of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (maqtu'). This chain is the most authentic of its chains up to al-Awza'i, so it is the closest to being correct in the narration of al-Awza'i, and Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is a narration from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) in Ibn Hibban's "al-Majruhin" (1/ 180), al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (11/ 11482), Ibn 'Asakir (10/ 462) and Ibn al-Jawzi's "al-Mawdu'at" (1197), as "marfu'": "Take (to yourselves) the black people, for three of them are among the leaders of the people of Paradise: Luqman the Wise, al-Najashi and Bilal the mu'adhdhin."
Grading: Ibn Hibban said: "This text is false (batil) and has no basis." We (the editors) say: Its chain contains "Ubayn bin Sufyan al-Maqdisi", about whom al-Bukhari said: His hadith is not to be written; and Ibn Hibban said: It is necessary to avoid his reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is also a narration from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in Ibn 'Asakir (10/ 462), Abu Tahir al-Silafi's "Ahadithuhu 'an Ja'far al-Sarraj" (3) and Ibn al-Jawzi's "Tanwir al-Ghabash" (55): "The leaders of the black people are four: Luqman the Abyssinian, al-Najashi, Bilal and Mihja'."
Grading: This is "mu'dal", because Ibn Jabir is among the Followers of the Successors (atba' al-tabi'in), so it is not authentic.
