Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi". The narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but there is disagreement over whether it is connected (mawsul) or "mursal". Most narrators narrated it from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr, in "mursal" form.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Daraqutni said in "al-'Ilal" (3537): "The mursal version is the correct one." "Abu Mu'awiyah" refers to Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir.
Reference / Source: It is in Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah's "al-Musannaf" (12/ 10) from Abu Mu'awiyah, from Hisham, from his father, in "mursal" form.
Reference / Source: Likewise al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (1008) from 'Ubayd bin Ghannam, from Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, from Hisham, from his father, in "mursal" form.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This shows that the "connected" narration with the author (al-Hakim) is an error (wahm) by a narrator below Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah, and Allah knows best. Al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" that 'Abd Allah bin Idris also narrated it from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in connected form, but we could not find this narration recorded in the sources available to us.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (30/ 67) by way of Yahya bin 'Abd Allah bin Salim, from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), in connected (mawsul) form.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But the chain up to him (Yahya) has some softness (lin).
Details of the narration: A group of Hisham's trustworthy students narrated it in "mursal" form.
Reference / Source: Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah recorded it in his "Tafsir" (as in "Taghliq al-Ta'liq" 3/ 267), and by way of him Ya'qub bin Sufyan (as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Isabah" 4/ 171-172), Abu Ishaq al-Tha'labi in his Tafsir (10/ 219), Ibn 'Asakir (30/ 67) and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (3/ 223). Yunus bin Bukayr also recorded it in his additions to "Sirat Ibn Ishaq" (p. 191), and by way of him al-Daraqutni in "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" (3/ 1143, 1534), al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (2/ 282) and "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1514), and Ibn al-Athir (6/ 365). Likewise Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (1130) by way of Hatim bin Isma'il, and Ibn 'Asakir (10/ 441) by way of Hammad bin Salamah.
Details of the narration: All four of them (Ibn 'Uyaynah, Yunus bin Bukayr, Hatim and Hammad bin Salamah) narrate it from Hisham bin 'Urwah, from his father, in "mursal" form. Al-Daraqutni mentioned in "al-'Ilal" that Abu Usamah, Abu Damrah and Ibn Abi al-Zinad also narrated it thus in "mursal" form.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar is narrated from Umm Hani' bint Abi Talib in the "Tarikh" of Muhammad bin 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah (as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Isabah" 8/ 257), and by way of him Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (8006), from Minjab bin al-Harith, from Ibrahim bin Yusuf, from Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah al-Bakka'i, from Humayd al-Tawil, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Umm Hani' said (and he mentioned it).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In "al-Isabah" a mention of "Ibn Ishaq" has been wrongly inserted between al-Bakka'i and Humayd al-Tawil; the correction comes from Abu Nu'aym's "al-Ma'rifah" and from "al-Isabah" itself (7/ 664, biography of Zinnirah al-Rumiyyah), where Ibn Hajar mentioned the narration of Muhammad bin 'Uthman bin Abi Shaybah again without mentioning Ibn Ishaq. This chain is "strong" (qawi) and its narrators are trustworthy. Ibrahim bin Yusuf (al-Sa'di) is strong in hadith, and his biography has passed under number (5163).
Note / Clarification: (1) In manuscript (B) and the printed edition this name was corrupted to "al-Hakim", whereas the correct form is "al-Hakam bin Musa al-Baghdadi".
