Muhammad bin Umar says that Bilal bin Rabah was the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). His kunyah was Abu Abdullah, and he was among the people of al-Sarah. He died in Damascus in the year 20 AH and was buried there near Bab al-Saghir in the cemetery of Damascus, being at that time a little over sixty years of age. Shu'ayb bin Talhah says that Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was the same age as Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Shu'ayb had greater knowledge of Bilal's date of birth.

Explanation & Benefits

Reference / Source: (1) This is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/ 213 and 9/ 389). Ibn Sa'd gave the introduction of Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) as his own statement, while the mention of his death and place of burial he narrated from his teacher Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi. Al-Waqidi gave it a chain, saying: Musa bin Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin al-Harith al-Taymi informed us, from his father. Note / Clarification: "al-Sarah" (with fathah on the sin and without doubling of the ra'): the region between Yemen and al-Ta'if.
31. Reference / Source: (1) This is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/ 220 and 9/ 390) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): By this, al-Waqidi prefers the statement of Shu'ayb bin Talhah over that of Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi, because Shu'ayb is among the descendants of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), as al-Waqidi himself stated explicitly. This quotation from al-Waqidi is also found in 'Abd al-Jabbar al-Khawlani's "Tarikh Darayya" (p. 31). Note / Clarification: "al-Tirb": a person close to you in age (a contemporary).
