Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This report is "hasan". The narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but it is "mursal"; however, since it is narrated through several routes, it is "hasan" taken together, in sha' Allah.
Note / Clarification: "Sufyan" refers to Ibn 'Uyaynah, "'Amr" refers to Ibn Dinar, and "al-Hasan bin Muhammad" refers to Ibn 'Ali bin Abi Talib.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/ 367), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir (73/ 52), from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim (the author) with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3335) by way of 'Abd al-Jabbar bin al-'Ala', from Sufyan, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hisham recorded it in "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (1/ 649), Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (6/ 122), Ibn Abi Shaybah in "al-Musannaf" (14/ 387), Ibn Abi Khaythamah in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (second volume: 554), al-Tabari in his Tarikh (2/ 465) and Ibn 'Asakir (73/ 50), by way of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said: Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata' narrated to me (then he mentioned it in "mursal" form).
Details of the narration: The wording is: ('Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said) "O Messenger of Allah, let me pull out the two front teeth of Suhayl bin 'Amr so that his tongue hangs out, and then he will never again stand up as a speaker against you anywhere." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will not mutilate him, lest Allah mutilate me, even though I am a Prophet." Ibn Ishaq said: It has reached me that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Umar in this hadith: "Perhaps he (Suhayl) will take a stand for which you will not blame him."
Grading: There is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim), but it is "mursal".
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in his Tarikh (73/ 50) by way of 'Amrah, from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), in "connected" (mawsul) form, with wording similar to that of Ibn Ishaq from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Ata'.
Grading: Its chain has some softness (lin), but it is fit for consideration (i'tibar) (as a supporting report).
Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi mentioned this report in his "al-Maghazi" (1/ 107), and Ibn 'Asakir (73/ 49) recorded it from him, like the narration of al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: What Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah said is supported by the narration of Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (6/ 124), and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir (73/ 56) recorded it, from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from Farwah bin Zubayd al-Madani, from Salamah bin Abi Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Awf, from his father, from Abu 'Amr bin 'Adi bin al-Hamra', who said: "I looked at Suhayl bin 'Amr on the day the news of the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Makkah; he had girded on his sword. Then (he said:) he addressed us with the sermon Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had delivered in Madinah, as if he had heard it. He said: 'O people, whoever used to worship Muhammad, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has died; and whoever used to worship Allah, Allah is Ever-Living and does not die. Allah announced the death of your Prophet to you while he was among you, and announced your own deaths to you. It is death, until no one remains …'"
