Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5311

It is narrated from al-Hasan al-Basri that some people came to the door of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), among them Suhayl bin Amr, Abu Sufyan bin Harb and other elders of Quraysh. Meanwhile his doorkeeper came out and began to grant entry to the people of Badr, such as Suhayb and Bilal (may Allah be pleased with them both). The narrator says: By Allah, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) loved the people of Badr greatly, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had also given instructions concerning them. Seeing this, Abu Sufyan said: I have never seen a sight like today's: these slaves are being given permission while we sit here and no attention is paid to us. Then Suhayl bin Amr (may Allah have mercy on him, how intelligent a man he was!) said: "O people, by Allah, I (understand) the expressions I see on your faces. If you are angry, then be angry with yourselves. These people were invited (to Islam) and so were you, but they hastened to accept it and you delayed. By Allah, their getting ahead of you in merit and excellence (which you cannot see today) should grieve you far more than missing out on this door over which you are competing with one another today." Then he said: "By Allah, there is now no way for you to reach the virtue in which these people have gone ahead of you. So now look to this jihad and hold fast to it; perhaps Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will grant you jihad and martyrdom." Then he shook out his garment, stood up and left for Syria. Al-Hasan al-Basri says: By Allah, he spoke the truth; Allah does not make a servant who hastens towards Him equal to one who is slow in His matter.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (3) The meaning is that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had instructed his doorkeeper (adhin) to admit the people of Badr first.

Note / Clarification: (1) This sentence is a parenthetical remark from the words of al-Hasan al-Basri.

Note / Clarification: (2) The word "la" had dropped out of our manuscripts; we have restored it from Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Jihad" (100), Ahmad's "al-Zuhd" (592) and elsewhere.

Note / Clarification: (3) In our manuscripts the phrase was corrupted to "man ta'tikum 'ala alladhina yunafisuna 'alaykum"; the correct form is what we have adopted (in the text), in agreement with the sources that record the report.

Note / Clarification: (4) Our manuscripts have "hadha" in place of "ha'ula'i"; what is adopted in the text is from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak", and it agrees with Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Jihad".

Note / Clarification: (5) The manuscripts have "fa-sadaqa Allah" (without the waw); the correction is from the sources that record the report.

Grading: (6) This report is "hasan". The narrators of this chain are trustworthy, but it is "mursal", because al-Hasan (Ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Basri) did not witness this story.
Important point: But this story is well known and more than one narrator has narrated it, as will come.

Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And Ibn 'Asakir (11/ 503) recorded it by way of al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, from Mus'ab bin 'Uthman al-Zubayri, from Nawfal bin 'Umarah bin al-Walid al-Nawfali in "mursal" form, mentioning a similar story but with "al-Harith bin Hisham" in place of Abu Sufyan bin Harb, and he added: "When they got up from 'Umar's presence, the two of them came to him and said: 'O Commander of the Believers, we have seen what you did today, and we realise that we have been held in suspicion regarding ourselves; is there anything by which we can make up (for the past)?' He said to them: 'I know of nothing but this direction,' and pointed them towards the Byzantine frontier. So they went out to al-Sham and died there."
Grading: There is no harm in the narrators of this narration (la ba'sa bihim).
