Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5289

Khalifah bin Khayyat says that the name of Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin Amr was Abdullah bin Suhayl. His mother's name was Fakhitah, who was from Banu Nawfal. He was present at Badr, and was at that time with the polytheists, but when they reached Badr he fled from there and joined the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He was martyred in the Battle of Yamamah.
Imam al-Hakim says: His death is recorded like this in the history of Khalifah bin Khayyat, but I think he was mistaken about the time of his death.

Reference / Source: (1) This is in Khalifah's "al-Tabaqat" (pp. 26-27).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He said: "Abu Jandal escaped," and then mentioned it. 'Asim bin 'Umar is a Successor (tabi'i), so this report is "mursal". And the narrator from him is not known; no one other than al-Waqidi narrated from him.
Important point: In any case, this report is "sahih and well-known" among the scholars of biography and military campaigns (al-siyar wa al-maghazi). It is in al-Bukhari (2731) in the narration of al-Zuhri from 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr from al-Miswar bin Makhramah and Marwan bin al-Hakam, but al-Bukhari does not mention the story of Abu Basir's death and the return of that fighting band to Madinah with Abu Jandal.
Reference / Source: However, al-Tabari recorded it in full in his "Tarikh" (2/ 638-639) from the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq, and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (4/ 172-175) by way of Musa bin 'Uqbah, both of them from al-Zuhri in "mursal" form.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Dala'il" (4/ 175-176) by way of Abu al-Aswad (the orphan in the care of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr), from 'Urwah, in "mursal" form.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi also recorded it (4/ 172-175) by another route from Musa bin 'Uqbah in "mursal" form. It is also in his "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (9/ 227) by that very same route, but there he did not cite it in full.
Note / Clarification: "al-'Is" (with kasrah on the 'ayn and sukun on the ya'): a valley of the Juhaynah tribe between Madinah and the sea. It flows into "Idam" from the left, from the western edges of Mount al-Ajrad and the adjoining mountains.
