Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5290

Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin Amr accepted Islam early on in Makkah, so his father Suhayl bin Amr imprisoned him, bound him in iron fetters and prevented him from emigrating. Then when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) halted at al-Hudaybiyah, and Suhayl bin Amr came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and settled the terms of the truce, at that very time Abu Jandal came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), dragging his fetters. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) handed him back to his father, because the peace treaty had been concluded between them. After that he somehow escaped and joined Abu Basir, who was at that time at al-Is. A group of Muslims had gathered with him there, and whenever a trade caravan of Quraysh passed by them, they would intercept it, kill those of them they could overpower, and seize their goods. Abu Jandal remained with Abu Basir until Abu Basir died. Then Abu Jandal and all the Muslims who were with him came to Madinah in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). After that he took part in the campaigns with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and after him (peace and blessings be upon him) continued to strive in the path of Allah, until he died in the plague of Amwas in Syria in the year 18 AH, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
