Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5278

Yahya bin Ma'in says that al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred on the day of the Battle of Yarmuk, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (3) "al-'Abbas" refers to Ibn Muhammad al-Duri, and this (statement) is in "al-Tarikh" of Yahya bin Ma'in (121), in his (al-Duri's) transmission.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This statement of Ibn Ma'in is based on the view that the Battle of Yarmuk took place in the year 13 AH, in the last days of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) and the first days of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him); this is the view of Sayf bin 'Umar, as in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (2/ 142-143), but the view of the majority is contrary to it. For the details of the disagreement over the year in which the Battle of Yarmuk took place, see "Tarikh Dimashq" (2/ 141-143) and Ibn Kathir's "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (9/ 552-545).
Important point: Most historians have said that it took place in the year 15 AH, and Ibn 'Asakir said: "These are the preserved (mahfuz) views."
