Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5277

It is narrated from Khalifah bin Khayyat that the kunyah of al-Fadl bin Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim was Abu Muhammad. He took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the campaigns of Makkah and Hunayn, and stood firm when the people turned their backs and fled. He was also present at the Farewell Hajj, and was among those who washed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and took charge of his (peace and blessings be upon him) burial. Then he set out for Syria for jihad, and died in the region of Jordan during the plague of Amwas in the year 18 AH, during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: (1) The word "fa-mata" had dropped out of our manuscripts; we have established it from Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (4/51 and 9/403).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) The author has thus attributed this introduction of al-Fadl bin 'Abbas to Khalifah bin Khayyat, although Khalifah bin Khayyat's statement in his "al-Tabaqat" (p. 297), in the narration of Musa bin Zakariyya al-Tustari, contradicts what is here. There he said: "Al-Fadl bin 'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim bin 'Abd Manaf has the kunyah Abu 'Abdullah, and it is said: his kunyah is Abu Muhammad. He was martyred in Syria on the day of 'Ajnadayn' in Jumada al-Akhirah of the year 13 AH, and it is also said that he was martyred on the day of 'Marj al-Suffar' in Jumada al-Ula of the year 13 AH." This is what he said in his "Tabaqat", and he based it on what he said in his "Tarikh" (p. 120), quoting Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini and Ibn al-Kalbi, that al-Fadl bin 'Abbas was martyred in the year 13 AH on the day of Ajnadayn.
Reference / Source: However, the text that the author (al-Hakim) has cited here is actually the statement of Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (7/399), and Ibn 'Asakir narrated it from him in "Tarikh Dimashq" (48/328).
Important point: Ibn Kathir said in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" (10/79): "He (al-Fadl) took part in the conquest of Syria and was martyred in the plague of 'Amwas. This is the statement of Muhammad bin Sa'd, al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, Abu Hatim and Ibn al-Barqi, and it is the correct view."
