أخبرَنَاه أحمد بن جعفر القَطِيعي، حدثنا عبد الله بن أحمد بن حنبل، حدثني أبي، حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، حدثنا شُعبة، سمعت فراسًا يُحدِّث عن الشَّعْبي، عن مسروق، عن عبد الله، قال: إنَّ معاذًا كان أمةً قانتًا، قال: فقال رجلٌ من أشْجَعَ يُقال له: فَرْوةُ بن نَوفَل: نسيَ، إنما ذاك إبراهيمُ ﵇، فقال عبدُ الله: مَن نَسِي؟ إنا كنا نُشبِّهُه بإبراهيمَ، وسُئل عبدُ الله عن الأمّةِ، فقال: مُعلِّمُ الخَيرِ، والقانتُ: المُطِيعُ الله ولرسوله ﷺ (1). صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه.

Masruq narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Indeed, Mu'adh was an (entire) nation and devoutly obedient." The narrator says: A man from the tribe of Ashja' named Farwah bin Nawfal said: "He has forgotten; that (verse) is about Ibrahim (peace be upon him)." Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Who has forgotten? We used to liken him (Mu'adh) to Ibrahim (peace be upon him)." Then Abdullah was asked about the ummah, and he said: "A teacher of goodness"; and qanit means "one who is obedient to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

(1) إسناده صحيح. فراس: هو ابن يحيى الهَمْداني المُكتِب، ومَسْروق: هو ابن الأجْدَع.
Grading: (1) Its chain is sahih.
Note / Clarification: "Firas" is Firas bin Yahya al-Hamdani al-Muktib, and "Masruq" is Masruq bin al-Ajda'.
وأخرجه مُسدَّد في "مسنده" كما في "المطالب العالية" لابن حجر (3647)، وابن سعد 2/ 301، والطبري في "تفسيره" 14/ 191، والطبراني (9944) وأبو الحُسين بن المطهَّر في "حديث شعبة بن الحجاج" (159)، وابنُ عساكر 58/ 420 من طرق عن شعبة، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Musaddad in his "Musnad" (as in Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" 3647), Ibn Sa'd (2/301), al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (14/191), al-Tabarani (9944), Abu al-Husayn bin al-Mutahhar in "Hadith Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj" (159) and Ibn 'Asakir (58/420) through various routes from Shu'bah, with this chain.
وقد تقدَّم عند المصنف برقم (3407) من طريق سفيان الثوري عن فراس.
Reference / Source: This narration has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) under number (3407) through the route of Sufyan al-Thawri, who narrates from Firas.
