Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5262

It is narrated from Urwah that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for the Battle of Hunayn, he (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) as his deputy over the people of Makkah, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to teach the people the Qur'an and to give them understanding of the religion. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to Madinah that same year and left Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) behind there to teach the people of Makkah.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is no harm in the narrators of this chain (la ba'sa bihim), as explained under number (4378), but it is "mursal". However, despite being mursal, since it is also narrated through other routes (which are mursal), the report is (collectively) sahih, in sha' Allah.
Reference / Source: It was recorded by Imam al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/201) from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim (the author), with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the "mursal" narration of Musa bin 'Uqbah in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Dala'il" (5/201), and its narrators are trustworthy.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also the "mursal" narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq is a supporting report, as in Ibn Hisham's "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" (2/500), and there is no harm in its narrators (la ba'sa bihim).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also narrated as a "mursal" of Mujahid in Ibn Sa'd (2/300); although its chain up to Mujahid is weak, it is fit for consideration (as a supporting report).
Important point: What appears in the hadith of Ibn Ka'b bin Malik, which has already appeared in abridged form under numbers (2379) and (5260), where some of its routes state that "the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen after placing a restriction (hajr) on his property after the conquest of Makkah, and that he remained there until he (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) died"; and likewise what appears in some narrations of the hadith of Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come under number (5276), that "this happened some time after the conquest of Makkah, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished with Hunayn": all of these are to be understood as meaning that his sending of Mu'adh to Yemen took place after the conquest of Makkah and after Hunayn.
Note / Clarification: Indeed, in one narration of Ibn Ka'b bin Malik it is stated that Mu'adh was sent to Yemen "after the Farewell Pilgrimage". This supports the soundness of the reconciliation (between the narrations), and (shows) that there is no contradiction. And Allah the Exalted knows best. See further al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/406-408).
