Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5241

It is narrated from Yazid bin Ruman that Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam along with Uthman bin Maz'un, Abd al-Rahman bin Awf and their companions before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered the House of al-Arqam. Abu Ubaydah made the second emigration to the land of Abyssinia. He took part in the Battles of Badr and Uhud, and on the day of Uhud, when the people scattered, he stood firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He is the one who, in the presence of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), pulled out with his teeth the two rings of the helmet (iron cap) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that had pierced his (peace and blessings be upon him) cheeks on the day of Uhud. The reason for this was that on that day he (peace and blessings be upon him) was struck on his blessed face, so that two rings of the helmet sank into his cheeks. While pulling out these rings, Abu Ubaydah's front teeth fell out, because of which he became 'athram' (one with broken teeth).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) The phrase "'an Abi Bakr al-Siddiq" has dropped out of the printed edition. The meaning is that Abu 'Ubaydah, taking the burden upon himself on behalf of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), pulled out the two rings of the helmet from the cheeks of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with his front teeth.

Grading: (5) All the narrators above Muhammad bin 'Umar (al-Waqidi) are trustworthy, but this report is "mursal". And the narrators below al-Waqidi are among those who narrated al-Waqidi's books from him, as explained under number (4060).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Ibn Sa'd corroborated them in "al-Tabaqat" (3/379), but he gave details: he took the story of the acceptance of Islam by Abu 'Ubaydah and his companions from the "mursal" narration of "Yazid bin Ruman", the story of Abu 'Ubaydah's emigration from al-Waqidi's shaykhs (introduced with the word "qalu" [they said]), and the story of Abu 'Ubaydah's presence at Badr and Uhud and his standing firm on the day of Uhud as the statement of "al-Waqidi" himself.
Details of the narration: Al-Waqidi, in his "al-Maghazi" (11/246-247), narrated with a chain the story of Abu 'Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) pulling out the two rings of the helmet from the cheeks of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with his front teeth, from Ishaq bin Yahya bin Talhah, with the same chain that has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) before it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Then al-Waqidi said: "It is also said that the one who pulled out the two rings from the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was 'Uqbah bin Wahb bin Kaladah, and it is also said it was Abu al-Yasar." Al-Waqidi said: "The most established of that in our view is that it was 'Uqbah bin Wahb bin Kaladah."
Reference / Source: However, Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (3/505) quoted al-Waqidi's statement that 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad said: "We think that both of them ('Uqbah bin Wahb and Abu 'Ubaydah) worked on them together, and both together took them (the two rings) out of the cheeks of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" And Allah the Exalted knows best.
Reference / Source: Ibn Ishaq counted Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah among those who made both emigrations to Abyssinia (the first and the second) [see: Sirat Ibn Hisham 1/329-369].
Note / Clarification: Ibn Sa'd said in "al-Tabaqat" (3/379): "Musa bin 'Uqbah and Abu Ma'shar did not mention him (among the emigrants to Abyssinia)."
