Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" "yushir" is written in place of "ghayr", and manuscripts (Z), (S) and (B) have it written the same way (without dots). The correct form is what we have established from Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (15604).
Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting evidence), and this chain is "hasan" for the purposes of corroborating chains and supporting reports. This is because of 'Umar bin Hamzah (Ibn 'Abdullah bin 'Umar), and this hadith of his has supporting reports that will come. "Abu Usamah" is Hammad bin Usamah.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in abridged form, with its marfu' part, by al-Bazzar (117), Abu Ya'la (228), al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi in "Nawadir al-Usul" (749), Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" (5/19), Abu Nu'aym in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (1/101), Abu al-Hasan al-Khila'i in "al-Khila'iyyat" (724) and Ibn 'Asakir (25/460) through various routes from Abu Usamah Hammad bin Usamah, with this chain.
Details of the narration: With the wording: "Every nation has a trustee, and the trustee of this nation is Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah."
Reference / Source: It was narrated at length by Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (1/488) and Ibn 'Asakir (25/458-459, 459) through the route of 'Abd al-Razzaq bin 'Umar al-Dimashqi, from al-Zuhri, from Salim bin 'Abdullah bin 'Umar, with this chain.
Grading: This 'Abd al-Razzaq is "matruk al-hadith" (abandoned in hadith), so this corroboration of his carries no weight.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir (25/462) narrated this story from Bilal bin Yahya al-'Absi al-Kufi, from 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Grading: There is "no harm" in its narrators, but it is "munqati'" (broken), because Bilal did not meet 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Reference / Source: It was also narrated by Ibn Ishaq (Sirat Ibn Hisham 1/583), Ibn al-Mundhir in his "Tafsir" (557) and Ibn 'Asakir (25/462): Muhammad bin Ja'far bin al-Zubayr narrated it to him, and he mentioned a similar story.
Grading: There is likewise "no harm" in its narrators, but it too is "munqati'". In any case, this report is "sahih" by the combination of these three routes (other than the route of 'Abd al-Razzaq bin 'Umar). Its marfu' part has other routes from 'Umar bin al-Khattab, one of which will come under number (5246); see all its routes there.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the hadith of Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman [Ahmad 38/(3377), al-Bukhari (4380), Muslim (2420), al-Nasa'i (8142, 8143)]. It contains the story, but without naming 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Details of the narration: He mentioned something similar, then said: "The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) raised their heads hoping for it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Stand up, O Abu 'Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah." (See number 5243.)
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is also supported by the hadith of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), without mention of the Companions raising their heads hoping for it, which will come under number (5244).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The marfu' part alone has a supporting report from the hadith of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), which will come under number (5245).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from the hadith of 'Umar bin al-Khattab, which will come under number (5246).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And from the hadith of Anas bin Malik, which will come under number (5894).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It will also come from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab under number (6414), but its chain is "da'if" (weak).
