Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5229

It is narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Maqburi that when Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) was struck by the plague, he said: "O Mu'adh, lead the people in prayer." So Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) led the people in prayer. Then Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away. Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) then stood among the people and said: "O people, turn to Allah in sincere repentance from your sins, for any servant who meets Allah having repented from his sin, it is a right upon Allah that He forgive him." Then he said: "O people, you have been grieved by the death of a man about whom, by Allah, I do not think that I have seen among the servants of Allah anyone with less rancour than him, purer of heart, further removed from evil and mischief, more eager for well-being, or a greater well-wisher of the common people than him. So pray for mercy for him, then go out to the open ground for his funeral prayer, for by Allah, no one like him will ever be ruler over you." So the people gathered, and the blessed body of Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought out. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward and led his funeral prayer. Then, when he was brought to his grave, Mu'adh bin Jabal, Amr bin al-As and al-Dahhak bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with them) went down into his grave. When they had placed him in the niche of the grave and come out and levelled the earth over him, Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said (standing at the grave): "O Abu Ubaydah, I will speak in your praise and I will not say anything false, for I fear that I may thereby incur the displeasure of Allah. By Allah, as far as I know, you were among those who remember Allah abundantly, and among those 'who walk upon the earth humbly' [Surah al-Furqan: 63], and 'when the ignorant address them, they say: Peace' [Surah al-Furqan: 63], and among those 'who, when they spend, are neither extravagant nor miserly, but their spending is moderate, between the two' [Surah al-Furqan: 67]. And by Allah, you were among the humble and lowly ones who show mercy to orphans and the poor, and who hate the treacherous and the arrogant."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it has been corrupted into "'amdan", and in (S) the space is left blank. The correct word ("ghimran") is established from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak"; it is with a kasrah under the ghayn, and in both form and meaning it is equivalent to "hiqd" (rancour).

Note / Clarification: (4) Manuscript (S) has "asbihu". "Ishar" means going out into the desert, and perhaps Mu'adh meant going out into the open (al-'ara').

Note / Clarification: (1) "Sanna al-turab": said when soil is poured out gently over the ground.

Grading: (2) Its chain is "da'if" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We have not been able to identify "'Amr bin Khalid bin 'Asim". "Abu Mikhnaf Lut bin Yahya" corroborated him in Abu Bakr al-Dinawari's "al-Mujalasah" (3143), but Abu Mikhnaf is "talif" (utterly worthless) and cannot be relied upon, so his corroboration carries no weight. Moreover, the narrator from him is also "mubham" (unnamed). Then, in his narration Abu Mikhnaf named "Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi", so a discrepancy arose in the name of the narrator of the story, and Sa'id al-Maqburi certainly did not witness this event.
