Muhammad bin Umar said: Sayyiduna al-Tufayl bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam in Makkah and followed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he returned to his people, the tribe of Daws, and remained there until he emigrated to Madinah after the battles of Badr, Uhud and the Trench. He arrived with those of his people who had accepted Islam at the time when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was at Khaybar. Then he joined the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at Khaybar, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted them a share (of the spoils) along with the Muslims.

Reference / Source: (1) It is narrated in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" [4/223] from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But he narrated it through 'Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Makhrami from 'Abd al-Wahid bin Abi 'Awn al-Dawsi from al-Tufayl bin 'Amr. It contains in detail the story of his acceptance of Islam, his return to (the land of) Daws, and then his coming immediately after Khaybar. The narrators above al-Waqidi are thiqah, but it is "munqati'", because 'Abd al-Wahid did not meet al-Tufayl bin 'Amr. However, Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated a similar story from al-Tufayl bin 'Amr [see: Sirat Ibn Hisham 1/382-385], but Ibn Ishaq did not mention his chain up to al-Tufayl.
