Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) This hadith is "sahih" (if Allah wills) on the basis of all its routes combined, and there is "no harm" in the narrators of this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But there is disagreement over it from 'Abd al-Razzaq: Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Dabari (the narrator of the Musannaf), in [al-Musannaf (1927)], made it "Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar from Nu'aym bin al-Nahham" (the musnad of Nu'aym). Whereas al-Hasan bin 'Ali al-Khallal (a thiqah hafiz), in [al-Ahad wa al-Mathani (762)], narrated it from 'Abd al-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj: "Nafi' informed me from 'Abdullah bin Nu'aym bin al-Nahham"; he did not mention Ibn 'Umar and made it the musnad of "'Abdullah bin Nu'aym". Al-Bukhari and al-Baghawi counted 'Abdullah bin Nu'aym as a Companion [al-Isabah 4/252], and likewise Ibn Abi 'Asim.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin 'Ajlan narrated it from Nafi' (as Abu Nu'aym said in "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" after no. 6389), from Nu'aym bin al-Nahham.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus he made it the hadith of Nu'aym bin al-Nahham, not of his son 'Abdullah. But Ibn 'Ajlan was "mudtarib" (inconsistent) in narrating hadith from Nafi', as Yahya al-Qattan said [see: 'Abdullah bin Ahmad's al-'Ilal (4945)]. Al-'Uqayli also narrated that from him in "al-Du'afa'" [3/531]. So perhaps he erred in it.
General principle: However, this hadith has other chains from Nu'aym bin al-Nahham (as his own hadith):
Reference / Source: Thus 'Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in "al-Musannaf" (1926), and from him Ahmad [29/(17933)], from Ma'mar, from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar, from a shaykh whom he named, from Nu'aym bin al-Nahham. It contains these words: "Pray in your dwellings" (sallu fi rihalikum).
Reference / Source: Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari also narrated it, but there is disagreement over it from him: Sulayman bin Bilal narrated it [in Ibn Abi Shaybah's Musnad (553), Ibn Abi 'Asim (760), al-Fakihi's Fawa'id (104), Abu Nu'aym's al-Ma'rifah (6389), al-Bayhaqi's al-Sunan 1/398]; and al-Awza'i [in Ibn Abi 'Asim (759), Ibn Qani''s Mu'jam al-Sahabah 3/152-153, al-Bayhaqi 1/398, 423]. Both of them (Sulayman and al-Awza'i) narrate from Yahya bin Sa'id, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin al-Harith al-Taymi, from Nu'aym bin al-Nahham.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Isma'il bin 'Ayyash differed from both of them in Ahmad (17934); he narrated it from Yahya bin Sa'id, from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Habban, from Nu'aym bin al-Nahham. Isma'il is weak in his narration from "non-Syrians", and this narration is one of those (from non-Syrians).
Reference / Source: Zayd bin Abi Unaysah narrated it [Ibn Qani' 3/153] from 'Umar bin Nafi' and 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar, from Nafi', from Ibn 'Umar, from Nu'aym bin al-Nahham.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All these chains are "ma'lul" (defective). The first chain has an "unnamed man". The second chain is "munqati'", because Muhammad bin Ibrahim did not meet Nu'aym bin al-Nahham (as Ibn 'Abd al-Barr said in al-Isti'ab p. 726 and Ibn 'Asakir in Tarikh Dimashq 62/176). Likewise Muhammad bin Yahya bin Habban was born long after Nu'aym's death.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the last chain, up to Ibn Abi Unaysah, there is "Ahmad bin Wahb al-Qurashi", whom we could not identify. He is alone in this chain. We think he erred in it, because Ma'mar narrated it from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar (as in 'Abd al-Razzaq's narration), and there an "unnamed shaykh" is mentioned; had that unnamed person been "Nafi'", his mention would not have escaped 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar, since he is his most famous shaykh. Moreover, the narration of 'Umar bin Nafi' is found nowhere except through this route (in which there is this unidentified narrator), so it carries no weight.
Important point: The "strongest" of all these routes is that of al-Hasan bin 'Ali al-Khallal: from 'Abd al-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj from Nafi' from 'Abdullah bin Nu'aym bin al-Nahham. In it Ibn Jurayj explicitly states that he heard from Nafi', which removes the suspicion of his tadlis.
Grading: So this chain is "sahih" (if Allah wills).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We think it most likely that whoever mentioned "'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab" in it confused this hadith with the hadith of Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar, narrated in al-Bukhari (632), Muslim (697) and others from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Umar from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar: "On a cold or rainy night during travel, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would order the mu'adhdhin to say: Pray in your dwellings (ala sallu fi rihalikum)."
General principle: Thus Nafi' (the client of Ibn 'Umar) narrated the hadith of 'Abdullah bin Nu'aym bin al-Nahham, and also the hadith of his master 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab.
Important point: And whoever merged one into the other has "erred". And Allah knows best.
Note / Clarification: The meaning of his (peace and blessings be upon him) words "la haraj" is: whoever stays seated, there is no blame on him, as in the narration of Ahmad and others.
