Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) Its chain is "hasan" (if Allah wills). The reason for this is Abu Ma'dan al-Minqari and 'Ubaydullah bin Muhammad al-Harithi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Identifying the narrators): 'Ubaydullah bin Muhammad al-Harithi (Ibn Yahya Abu al-Rabi') was from al-Ahwaz and settled in Tustar; a group of hadith masters narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and called him "mustaqim al-hadith" (sound in hadith). There is disagreement over the name of Abu Ma'dan al-Minqari; the author called him "'Amir bin Mas'ud", al-Tabarani "'Amir bin Murrah", and al-Daraqutni "'Abdullah bin Ma'dan". A group of trustworthy narrators also narrated from him. Ibn Ma'in called him "salih" (fair), and al-Daraqutni "la ba'sa bihi" (there is no harm in him).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it [7/388] from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" [17/(338)] from Ahmad bin Yahya bin Zuhayr with this same chain; and [22/(297)] via Sa'id bin 'Anbasah al-Qattan; and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in "Tarikh Baghdad" [10/468] via al-Hasan bin al-Hakam bin Tahman. Both of them narrate from Abu Ma'dan, from 'Awn bin Abi Juhayfah, from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Thus they made it the narration of 'Awn bin Abi Juhayfah from his father. Likewise 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mushir narrated it from Abu Ma'dan (as found in al-Daraqutni's al-'Ilal 815) and made it part of the musnad of 'Awn bin Abi Juhayfah from his father. But al-Daraqutni said: "The correct one is the hadith of Abu 'Asim (who is in the author's chain here)."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We say: Sa'id bin 'Anbasah was accused of lying, and 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mushir is "matruk al-hadith". The best of them is al-Hasan bin al-Hakam, about whom Abu Hatim said: "His hadith is fair, not that strong; he is inconsistent." Al-Daraqutni considered this hadith of his "gharib". Whereas Abu 'Asim (al-Dahhak bin Makhlad) is a thiqah hafiz. Therefore it is his narration that is correct. Moreover, no narration of Abu Ma'dan from 'Awn bin Abi Juhayfah is known, whereas we found two narrations of his from 'Awn bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah: one in Ibn Abi Hatim's Tafsir and the other in al-Bayhaqi's Shu'ab al-Iman (10268).
Reference / Source: Similarly, Ahmad [13/(7906)] and Abu Dawud (3284) recorded it via Yazid bin Harun, from al-Mas'udi ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah), from 'Awn bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah, from his brother 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah, from Abu Hurayrah. It is shorter than the narration of 'Utbah bin Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In Abu Dawud the father "'Abdullah bin 'Utbah" is mentioned instead of the brother 'Ubaydullah, whereas the correct one is "'Ubaydullah", as in Ahmad's narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri differed from 'Awn in this chain; he narrated it from 'Ubaydullah bin 'Abdullah, from a man of the Ansar, that he brought a black slave-girl [Ahmad 25/(15743)]. It contains the additional question about resurrection after death, and the first question also differs: "Do you bear witness that there is no god but Allah?"
Important point: That is why Ibn Khuzaymah stated firmly in "al-Tawhid" [1/288] that it is a "different hadith" from the hadith of al-Mas'udi from 'Awn.
General principle: Thus we have three hadiths: 1- that of 'Utbah bin Mas'ud, 2- that of Abu Hurayrah, 3- that of the man of the Ansar. They differ from one another in their context, wording and additions. So it is as if there is "idtirab" (inconsistency) in this hadith. And Allah knows best.
