Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5204

Abdullah bin Utbah bin Mas'ud narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood to lead the morning prayer and stretched out his hand in front of him. When the prayer was completed, a man asked about it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan came, so I rebuked him and drove him away. Had I seized him, I would have tied him to one of the pillars of the mosque so that the children of Madinah would walk around him."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the printed edition the words "haddathana Muhammad" (Muhammad narrated to us) occur, which are an insertion, because the kunyah of Muhammad bin Ahmad al-Razi is "Abu Ja'far". Apart from the author (al-Hakim) here, we have found him ascribed as "al-Baghdadi" nowhere; we think this arose from a slip of the pen, because it is the author's habit to narrate from his shaykh Abu Ja'far al-Baghdadi (Muhammad bin Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Hamzah al-Jammal), so perhaps in the flow of the pen that same ascription was written here too. And Allah knows best.

Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and there is "no harm" in the narrators of this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But there is disagreement over the name of the Companion. The correct view is that this hadith belongs to "Jabir bin Samurah", and Simak (Ibn Harb) heard it from him, as Isra'il, Zuhayr bin Mu'awiyah and others narrated it. 'Amr bin Abi Qays also narrated it this way once. So without doubt this is correct. And Allah knows best. In any case, it has "sahih supporting reports".
