Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) Its narrators are thiqah, but what is "mahfuz" (preserved) in this chain is the intermediary "'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an" between Hammad bin Salamah and 'Ammar bin Abi 'Ammar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Everyone other than the author (al-Hakim) who narrated this report mentioned 'Ali bin Zayd. Although Hammad bin Salamah's "hearing" (sama') from 'Ammar bin Abi 'Ammar is established in general and his narration from him is well known, most probably he did not hear this particular report from him directly. And once (the intermediary 'Ali bin Zayd) is established, (bear in mind that) 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an is "da'if al-hadith" (weak in hadith).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Kabir" [22/(824)] and "al-Awsat" (6546) via Ishaq bin al-Dayf, from 'Amr bin 'Asim al-Kilabi, from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd, from 'Ammar, from Abu Habbah.
Details of the narration: With the wording: "On the day of Hunayn, whichever direction the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) looked, he saw Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith fighting there, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed Abu Sufyan is the best of my family (or he said: among the best of my family)."
Reference / Source: Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani recorded it in "al-Muntaqa min Kitab al-Tabaqat" (p. 33) from 'Ubaydullah bin al-Hajjaj bin al-Minhal, from 'Amr bin 'Asim, from Hammad, from 'Ali bin Zayd, from 'Ammar, from Abu Habbah, from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "In whichever direction I looked, I saw Abu Sufyan (fighting)."
Reference / Source: Abu 'Ali al-Sawwaf recorded it in the third part of his "Fawa'id" (81) via Abu Salamah Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki, from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from 'Ammar bin Abi 'Ammar.
Details of the narration: ('Ammar says): al-Hasan bin 'Ali and 'Abdullah bin Nawfal (disagreed). 'Abdullah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Hunayn - while Abu Sufyan was at his side, and every time he turned he found him at his side - "Abu Sufyan is the best of my family" (meaning Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith bin 'Abd al-Muttalib). At that al-Hasan bin 'Ali said: (No, rather he said): "among the best of my family" (min khayri ahli). 'Abdullah said: Between me and you (as the deciding witness) is Abu Habbah al-Badri. So al-Hasan sent 'Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi', and 'Abdullah bin Nawfal sent 'Ubaydullah bin Nawfal. 'Ammar says: I said (to myself): By Allah, I will surely hear what Abu Habbah says too. So he heard it. The two messengers asked him, and he said: "Yes! On the day of Hunayn, every time the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned, he found Abu Sufyan at his side, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Khayru ahli' (the best of my family)." At that 'Ubaydullah asked: Was it "min khayri ahli" (among the best of my family)? He said (again, emphatically): "(No, rather) khayru ahli."
Reference / Source: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi recorded it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (as found in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "al-Isabah" [4/405]), and from him Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" [2/180], via Rawh bin Aslam, from Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd, from 'Ammar bin Abi 'Ammar, from "'Ubaydullah bin Nawfal", that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Hunayn (the rest with the same meaning).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here he made it part of the musnad of "'Ubaydullah bin Nawfal" (in the diminutive form). Yet it has become clear to us from the narration of Abu 'Ali al-Sawwaf that the one who narrated it is "'Abdullah bin Nawfal" (in the non-diminutive form), and this is correct. "Rawh bin Aslam" (in the chain) is also a weak narrator; perhaps the error came from him.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (as a shahid) by the narration that Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar, the author of the Sirah, narrated as "mu'dal" (with a break in the chain). It is found in al-Mu'afa bin Zakariyya al-Nahrawani's "al-Jalis al-Salih" (p. 121).
Note / Clarification: It is likewise in Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (6233), but in the chain of his printed edition there is an omission (saqt) and a corruption (tahrif), which can be corrected from "al-Jalis al-Salih".
Note / Clarification: Mus'ab al-Zubayri also mentioned this report, as will come with the author (al-Hakim) later at no. (5195).
