Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) Manuscripts (Z) and (B) have "wa law kana munadiyan" instead of "wa kana lahu munadin" (and he had a crier), which is wrong.
Grading: (2) This hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic through supporting reports), and the narrators of this chain are thiqah (trustworthy), but it is "mursal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For 'Urwah (bin al-Zubayr) did not meet Sa'd bin 'Ubadah. He did, however, meet Sa'd's son "Qays" (as occurs in some narrations), so perhaps he heard it from him. In any case, a report like this has been narrated through several routes. "Abu Usamah" refers to Hammad bin Usamah.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1200), and via him Ibn 'Asakir [20/264], from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd [3/566, 567], Ibn Abi Shaybah [9/100], Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Islah al-Mal" (54) and "Qira al-Dayf" (22), Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (1085), al-Tabarani in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (176), and Ibn 'Asakir [20/262-263, 263, 263-264 and 264] recorded it via various routes from Abu Usamah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Ibn Sa'd and Ibn Abi Shaybah from Abu Usamah these words occur, that 'Urwah said: "I met Sa'd bin 'Ubadah while he was calling out from his fortress (utum)... then after that I met his son..." These words are "gharib" (strange), because 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr was born long after the death of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (it is said in 23 AH or later), whereas Sa'd died early in the caliphate of 'Umar, or in the caliphate of Abu Bakr.
Details of the narration: Ibn Sa'd and Ibn Abi Shaybah added this statement of 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr: "When I was a young man I was walking along a road of Madinah when 'Abdullah bin 'Umar passed by... He said: Young man! Look, do you see anyone calling out on the fortress of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah? I said: No. He said: You have spoken the truth."
Important point: We say: perhaps 'Abdullah bin 'Umar is the one who told 'Urwah this report, and the one who said "I met Sa'd bin 'Ubadah" is actually 'Abdullah bin 'Umar. This is possible. If that is established, the chain becomes "muttasil" (connected) and "sahih". And Allah knows best.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This is supported by what Ibn 'Abd al-Barr recorded in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 281) and Ibn 'Asakir [49/417] via al-Waqidi, from 'Abdullah bin Nafi', from his father, who said: Ibn 'Umar passed by the fortress of Sa'd and said: "O Nafi'! This is his grandfather's fortress. His crier used to call out every year: 'Whoever wants fat and meat, let him come to the house of Dulaym.' Then Dulaym died, and 'Ubadah's crier made the same call; then 'Ubadah died, and Sa'd's crier made the same call; then I saw Qays bin Sa'd doing the same."
Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft), but it is fit to serve among supporting reports.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar narration is reported from Muhammad bin Sirin as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Musaddad recorded it in his "Musnad" (as found in al-Busiri's "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" 3989), Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (1084, 1087), Ibn 'Asakir [20/264 and 49/417], and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" [4/199].
Grading: And its narrators are also thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And the supplication of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah alone, similar to what occurs here, is also reported from Yahya bin Abi Kathir as "mursal".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah [9/100], Hannad bin al-Sari in "al-Zuhd" (739), Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Qira al-Dayf" (21), Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i in "al-Ghaylaniyyat" (1086), Ibn 'Asakir [20/255], and Ibn al-Jawzi in "al-Muntazam" [4/199] recorded it.
Grading: Its narrators are also thiqah.
