Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5177

Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Numayr said: Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), whose kunyah was Abu Thabit, died at Hawran in the land of Syria when two and a half years of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had been completed; that was at the end of the year 15 AH.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: (2) This is reported in al-Tabarani's "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (5358) from 'Ubayd bin Ghannam and Muhammad bin 'Abdullah al-Hadrami, and in Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" (3118) by way of Muhammad bin 'Abdus bin Kamil; all of them narrate it from Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin Numayr.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn Sa'd narrated in "al-Tabaqat" [3/ 570 and 9/ 394] from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from Yahya bin 'Abd al-'Aziz bin Sa'id bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah, from his father.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini contradicted al-Waqidi in this [see al-Baghawi's "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" 3/ 17]. He narrated from Yahya bin 'Abd al-'Aziz, from his father, that: "Sa'd bin 'Ubadah died during the caliphate of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A similar statement is that of Khalifah bin Khayyat (as in "Tarikh Dimashq" 20/ 267), where he said: "He died in the year 11 AH."
Reference / Source: There are also other views on this, which you can see in "Tarikh Dimashq" [20/ 267-268].
