(1). Yahya bin Abd al-Aziz bin Sa'id described the lineage of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah as follows: Yahya bin Abd al-Aziz bin Sa'id bin Sa'd bin Ubadah bin Dulaym bin Harithah bin al-Nu'man bin Abi Hazimah bin Tha'labah bin Tarif bin al-Khazraj bin Sa'idah bin Ka'b bin al-Khazraj. Muhammad bin Umar said: The kunyah of Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) was Abu Thabit, and he was counted among the 'kamalah' (that is, those who knew writing, swimming and archery). He was one of the seventy Ansar who pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the Night of Aqabah, and this is agreed upon in the reports of all the narrators. He was also one of the twelve nuqaba' (representatives) of the Ansar. He was an extremely generous chief. He did not (personally) take part in the Battle of Badr. It is mentioned that he was preparing fully to go out for the battle and was going to the homes of the Ansar urging them to go out for jihad, but before he could set out he was bitten by some venomous creature, and because of this he stayed behind. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said about him: "Although Sa'd was not able to take part in the Battle of Badr, he was very eager (desirous) to take part in it." He did, however, take part in the battles of Uhud, the Trench and all the other battles.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) In manuscript (S) this word has come with a dotted "kha'" (kha' mu'jamah), while in manuscript (Z) it has been corrected with an undotted "ha'" (ha' muhmalah), and both are reported. Reference / Source: As in al-Khatib's "Tarikh Baghdad" [1/ 529] in the biography of Qays bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah, and in Abu Dharr al-Khushani's "al-Imla' al-Mukhtasar" (p. 19). Important point: But vocalising it with "ha'" (ha' muhmalah) is better known, and this is what al-Daraqutni stated decisively in "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" [2/ 911], Ibn Makula in "al-Ikmal" [3/ 141], and Ibn al-Athir in "Usd al-Ghabah" (in the biography of Sa'd bin 'Ubadah) [2/ 206] and in "al-Lubab fi Tahdhib al-Ansab" [2/ 92]; and this is what Abu Dharr al-Khushani judged correct. Note / Clarification: Some scholars say in his lineage only "Ibn Hazimah", without the word "Abi", as 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr named him at the beginning of the biography.
Reference / Source: (1) This is reported in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" [3/ 567] from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi. Note / Clarification: And there is disagreement about whether Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) took part in the Battle of Badr, as has passed before.
