Hisham bin al-Kalbi says, concerning the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), "And the first blood that I abolish (as blood-revenge from the time of the Jahiliyyah) is the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith," that his son was being nursed among Banu Layth and was killed by Banu Hudhayl. Hisham says: Rabi'ah was not killed; rather, he lived after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). The one who was killed at the hands of Hudhayl was his son.
Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Sa'id bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him):

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) Hisham bin al-Kalbi (Hisham bin Muhammad bin al-Sa'ib al-Kalbi) is a "matruk" narrator, and this report of his is "mu'dal" (with two or more consecutive narrators missing). Important point: However, this report is established as sahih with a "mawsul" (connected) chain from the hadith of Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Sahih Muslim (1218), Abu Dawud (1905), Ibn Majah (3074) and Ibn Hibban (1457, 3944). Details of the narration: In most narrations the words are "the blood of the son of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith", while in some narrations (as here) the words are "the blood of Rabi'ah". Note / Clarification: Al-Tabarani said in the supplement (dhayl) to "al-Mudhayyal" (as in the "Muntakhab" of 'Arib al-Qurtubi [11/ 528]): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first blood that I abolish is the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith", although Rabi'ah was alive at that time. This means it was blood for which Rabi'ah had the right to seek retaliation in the Jahiliyyah. What happened was that a young son of Rabi'ah had been sent to Banu Layth bin Bakr to be nursed. There was war between Banu Hudhayl and Banu Layth. The son of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith, who was still an infant crawling in front of the houses, came out, and Hudhayl struck him with a stone which crushed his head. Islam came before Rabi'ah could avenge his son's blood, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) declared the claim for that blood void and left Rabi'ah no way (of retaliation) against his son's killer. Important point: We say: with this explanation the difficulty that Hisham bin al-Kalbi encountered is removed.
