Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5154

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that some people had spoken insolently about him and had said: "The likeness of Muhammad is only that of a date-palm that has grown on a rubbish heap." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "O people! Allah Almighty created His creation and divided them into two groups, and He placed me in the better of the two groups. Then He divided them into tribes and placed me in the best tribe. Then He divided them into households and placed me in the best household." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the best of you in tribe and the best of you in household."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (1) This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi", but this present chain is "weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of Yazid bin Abi Ziyad (al-Hashimi, their mawla, al-Kufi). Also, there is disagreement in what is reported from him regarding the name of the Companion (as will come later). His saying here "from Rabi'ah bin al-Harith" is "gharib" (strange) compared with the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah from Ibn Fudayl (Muhammad) from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in his "Musnad" (919) and "al-Musannaf" [11/ 430] from Ibn Fudayl, and there he named the Companion as "'Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah". Likewise several others narrated it from Ibn Abi Shaybah, and 'Ali bin Harb al-Mawsili narrated it from Ibn Fudayl.
Reference / Source: It is narrated in Musnad Ahmad [29/ (17517)] by way of Yazid bin 'Ata', from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, from 'Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal, from 'Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin 'Abd al-Muttalib.
Note / Clarification: That is, it is like the narration of Ibn Abi Shaybah from Ibn Fudayl.
Reference / Source: It is narrated in Musnad Ahmad [3/ (1788)] and by al-Tirmidhi (3532, 3608) by way of Sufyan al-Thawri, from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, from 'Abdullah bin al-Harith, from al-Muttalib bin Abi Wada'ah. Imam al-Tirmidhi said: "This hadith is hasan." Al-Tirmidhi (3607) also narrated it by way of Isma'il bin Abi Khalid, from Yazid bin Abi Ziyad, from 'Abdullah bin al-Harith, from al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib, and he also called it "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (shahid) by the hadith of Wathilah bin al-Asqa', which is in Musnad Ahmad [28/ (16986)], Sahih Muslim (2276), al-Tirmidhi (3605, 3606) and Ibn Hibban (6242) with these words: "Indeed Allah chose Kinanah from the descendants of Isma'il, chose Quraysh from Kinanah, chose Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and chose me from Banu Hashim."
Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi also mentioned other supporting reports for it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" [1/ 165 - 176], which may be consulted.
