It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nawfal bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he sought the help of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in getting married, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) married him to a woman. When he looked for something (for the dowry or expenses), he found nothing. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent his coat of mail with Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' and Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with them both), and they pawned it with a Jewish man for thirty sa' of barley. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave that barley to them. We ate from it for half a year; then, when we measured it, we found it was just as much as it had been at the start. Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had you not measured it, you would have kept eating from it for as long as you lived." As for Rabi'ah, Ubaydah, Tufayl and Husayn (the sons of al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib), they were martyred in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (4) In our manuscripts this name was corrupted into "Abu Ishaq", which is a mistake. We corrected it from al-Bayhaqi's "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah", where he narrated this report from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim. Ibn Kathir cited it in "al-Bidayah wa al-Nihayah" [8/ 664], and its editor pointed out that all the manuscripts of al-Bidayah have "Ibn Ishaq". Note / Clarification: In the printed edition of "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" [6/ 114] "Abu Ishaq" has been printed; we think this is an oversight by the editor of "al-Dala'il" regarding his manuscripts, because Ibn Kathir's quotation from "al-Dala'il" is more reliable (the main authority). This is also supported by the fact that al-Tabarani transmitted several reports up to "Ibn Ishaq" with this same chain (series). "Ibn Ishaq" is "Muhammad bin Ishaq al-Muttalibi" (their freed slave), the author of the Sirah.
Grading: (1) Its chain is "weak". Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of "Ibn Lahi'ah" ('Abdullah bin Lahi'ah al-Misri), because his memory deteriorated after his books were burned. Also "Sa'id bin al-Harith" is not known. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajr's decisive statement in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (17215) that he was a Companion is not accepted, because he has no predecessor (salaf) for it. Ibn Sa'd mentioned him in "al-Tabaqat" [4/ 52] among the children of al-Harith bin Nawfal and said that his mother was an "umm walad"; so it is unlikely that he met his grandfather "Nawfal". And Allah knows best. Moreover, Ibn Ishaq is a "mudallis" and he has narrated with "'an'anah". Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" [6/ 114] from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): But in his version Sa'id bin al-Harith is qualified as "Ibn 'Ikrimah", and this is "strange" (gharib)!
