It is narrated from Ali bin Isa al-Nawfali that when Sayyiduna Nawfal bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) was taken captive at Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Nawfal! Ransom yourself." He said: O Messenger of Allah! I have nothing with which to ransom myself. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ransom yourself with your spears that are at Juddah." (On hearing this) he said: I bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah (for knowledge of the spears was not possible without revelation). So he ransomed himself with them, and they were a thousand spears. The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) established brotherhood between Nawfal and Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib, and even in the days of the Jahiliyyah the two had been trading partners, equal sharers in their wealth, and loving towards each other. Nawfal (may Allah be pleased with him) took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the Conquest of Makkah, Hunayn and Ta'if, and at the Battle of Hunayn he stood firm with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). On that occasion the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is as though I see your spears breaking the backs of the polytheists."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
717. Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In the printed edition, before this phrase there is another phrase whose words are: "Wallahi ma 'alima ahadun anna li bi-Juddah rimahan ba'da Allahi ghayri" (By Allah! After Allah, no one but me knew that I had spears in Jeddah). Note / Clarification: This phrase is not in any of our manuscripts, nor did Ibn Sa'd mention it in his narration of this report [4/ 42]. However, it is mentioned in Ibn 'Abd al-Barr's "al-Isti'ab" (p. 717).
Note / Clarification: (2) In our manuscripts this word has come as "Hunayn" (diptote, ghayr munsarif), meaning "the battle of Hunayn". It may also be that the word follows the dialect of the tribes of Rabi'ah and Ghanm, i.e. it is accusative (with a fathah) in pronunciation but written without the accusative alif.
Reference / Source: (3) This narration is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" [4/ 42] from 'Ali bin 'Isa al-Nawfali, from his father, from his paternal uncle Ishaq bin 'Abdullah bin al-Harith, from 'Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal, who said: "When Nawfal was captured..." and then he mentioned the whole narration with a connected chain (musnad). Technical note / Defect ('illah): 'Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal has the honour of having seen (the Prophet) (ru'yah), but 'Ali bin 'Isa and his father are both not known (they are majhul). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Al-Bayhaqi narrated this same report in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" [3/ 144] from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, and there this chain is "mawsul" (connected) just as it is in Ibn Sa'd's Tabaqat. (5496). Note / Clarification: Then Imam al-Bayhaqi commented on it, saying: "What is well known among the scholars of the maghazi is that al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) paid his ransom!" Details of the narration: We (the editors) say: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Dala'il" [3/ 142] and said: This is reported from Ibn Ishaq, from Yazid bin Ruman, from 'Urwah, and from al-Zuhri and a group, who said... and al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib said: "O Messenger of Allah! I was a Muslim (at heart)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah knows best about your Islam. If it is as you say, Allah will reward you for it; but what appeared of you was against us, so ransom yourself, and also ransom your two nephews, Nawfal bin al-Harith bin 'Abd al-Muttalib and 'Aqil bin Abi Talib bin 'Abd al-Muttalib..." Important point: This narration will come later with the author (al-Hakim) at number (5496).
