It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and the news reached the people of Makkah, Abu Quhafah (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the sound of (people's cries and) alarm. He asked: What is this? The people told him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away. He said: This is a tremendous calamity. Who, then, has taken charge of the affair (of the caliphate) after him? They said: Your son. He asked: Have Banu Makhzum and Banu al-Mughirah (such great tribes) accepted this? They said: Yes. Then he said: O Allah, there is none who can bring down what You raise, and none who can raise what You bring down. Then, as the year was nearing its end, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away. When the news reached the people of Makkah, Abu Quhafah (may Allah be pleased with him) again heard the same sound of alarm and asked: What is this? The people told him that his son had passed away. He said: This too is a great calamity, yet the calamity before it (the passing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) was far greater than this. Then he asked: Who has now taken charge after him? The people told him: Umar bin al-Khattab. He said: He was indeed Abu Bakr's true companion.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Nawfal bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib, of Banu Hashim bin Abd Manaf, whose kunyah was Abu al-Harith after his son al-Harith. He was the oldest of those of Banu Hashim who accepted Islam, older even than his two uncles, Sayyiduna Hamzah and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and his brothers Rabi'ah, Abu Sufyan and Abd Shams.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In our manuscripts this word was corrupted into "Sayf", which is a mistake. We corrected it from two other chains exactly like this chain which have passed with the author (al-Hakim) at numbers (96) and (535). And this "Harun bin Yusuf" is in fact "Ibn Harun al-Shatawi".
Grading: (2) Its narrators are thiqah, but what is "mahfuz" in it is that it is reported from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as "mursal", without mention of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) (as will be explained later). Important point: Although it is mursal, because of the eminence of Sa'id bin al-Musayyib it is among the "asahh al-marasil" (the most authentic mursal narrations). Technical note / Defect ('illah): (Identification of the narrators): "Ibn Abi 'Umar" is Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar al-'Adani, "Sufyan" is Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and "al-Walid bin Kathir" is al-Qurashi al-Makhzumi (their freed slave). Reference / Source: Al-Fakihi narrated it in "Akhbar Makkah" (1832), and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" [3/ 460] by way of Ya'qub bin Sufyan. Both of them (al-Fakihi and Ya'qub) narrate it from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Abi 'Umar al-'Adani with this same chain from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as "mursal". Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn Sa'd narrated it in [3/ 168] (and from him al-Baladhuri in "Ansab al-Ashraf" [1/ 589-590 and 10/ 68-69]), and Ibn 'Abd al-Barr in "al-Isti'ab" (p. 379), and Ibn 'Asakir [30/ 459, 460] by way of 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr al-Humaydi; and al-Fakihi (1832) from 'Abd al-Jabbar bin al-'Ala'; and al-Lalaka'i in "Sharh Usul I'tiqad Ahl al-Sunnah" (2451) by way of Muhammad bin 'Abbad bin al-Zibriqan al-Makki. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: These three narrators (al-Humaydi, 'Abd al-Jabbar and Muhammad bin 'Abbad) narrate it from Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, and they too report it with this same chain from Ibn al-Musayyib as "mursal". Reference / Source: Ibn Sa'd [3/ 192] also narrated it, and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir [30/ 459 - 460], from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi, from al-Dahhak bin 'Uthman, from 'Umarah bin 'Abdullah bin Sayyad, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib as "mursal".
