Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (1) In our manuscripts this word was corrupted into "sirah" (with an unpointed sad and ha'), whereas the correct word is "diram" (with a pointed dad and a mim at the end).
Note / Clarification: "Diram" means the flames of "'arfaj" (a plant). 'Arfaj is a small, well-known shrub that catches fire very quickly, and its flame is intensely red. Its redness is used for exaggeration, so it is said: "As though his beard were the flame of an 'arfaj shrub."
Grading: (2) Its "marfu'" part is sahih. It has passed shortly before at number (5141) by way of Muhammad bin Sirin from Anas.
Details of the narration: As for the statement of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the colour of Abu Quhafah's beard, that refers to the time after he had dyed it.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And it has a "hasan shahid" (good supporting report), which will be mentioned later.
Grading: However, this particular chain is "weak" because of the weakness of Muhammad bin Shuja' bin al-Thalji and al-Hasan bin Ziyad al-Lu'lu'i.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Those who accused the two of them of lying exaggerated; that is why Imam al-Dhahabi, when writing their biographies in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'", paid no attention to those accusations. Moreover, both of them are "corroborated" (i.e. others have also narrated this narration).
Note / Clarification: As for "Yazid Abu Khalid", we could not identify him definitively. There is inconsistency in his name here; Imam Abu Hanifah sometimes called him "Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman" and sometimes "Yazid al-Rishk". If the first name (Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman) is taken and he is "Abu Khalid al-Dalani", then he did not meet Anas; and if he is the second (Yazid al-Rishk), then his kunyah is "Abu al-Azhar", not "Abu Khalid", although he did live in the time of Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajr, decisively in "Tahdhib al-Tahdhib", and only as a supposition (without certainty) in "al-Ithar bi-Ma'rifat Ruwat al-Athar" (272), held that he is "Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad al-Za'afiri al-Awdi", a trustworthy Successor (tabi'i).
Note / Clarification: But we have not seen any evidence for this claim. Moreover, this Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Awdi has the kunyah "Abu Dawud", not "Abu Khalid".
Reference / Source: Ibn Khusraw narrated it in "Musnad Abi Hanifah" (1206) by way of Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Hubaysh al-Baghawi, from Muhammad bin Shuja', with this same chain.
Details of the narration: This narration is abridged and contains only the statement of Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioning the colour of Abu Quhafah's beard after the white hair was changed.
Reference / Source: Likewise this narration, abridged to the same extent, is in the Musnad of al-Hasan bin Ziyad, as in Abu al-Mu'ayyad al-Khwarizmi's "Jami' al-Masanid" [2/ 324].
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin al-Hasan al-Shaybani also narrated it in abridged form in "al-Athar" (902) (and by way of Muhammad bin al-Hasan, Ibn Khusraw narrated it (1238)), from Abu Hanifah, from Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman, from Anas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Here too he mentioned the father's name as "'Abd al-Rahman" but did not mention his kunyah.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ibn Sa'd narrated it in "al-Tabaqat" [6/ 80] through 'Amr bin al-Haytham Abu Qatan, from Abu Hanifah, from "Yazid bin 'Abd al-Rahman", from Anas. And al-Qadi Abu Yusuf also narrated it in "al-Athar" (1036) from Abu Hanifah, from Yazid al-Rishk, from Anas.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani also narrated it in abridged form in "Musnad Abi Hanifah" (p. 262) by way of Ibrahim bin Tahman, from Abu Hanifah, from Yazid, from Anas bin Malik.
Note / Clarification: Here he left the name unqualified (just Yazid) and added no qualifier (father's name or title).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The statement of Anas that "after the dyeing, the colour of Abu Quhafah's beard was red" is supported (shahid) by the hadith of Abu Raja' al-'Utaridi, which he narrates from Jabir bin 'Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). Its takhrij has passed under hadith number (5145).
Details of the narration: Its words are: "So they took him (Abu Quhafah) and made him red (i.e. dyed it red)."
Grading: And its chain is "hasan".
