Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan" by the combination of all its routes, and the narrators of this chain are "la ba'sa bihim", but it is "mursal", as al-Dhahabi pointed out in "al-Talkhis". For Mus'ab bin Sa'd (bin Abi Waqqas) did not hear from 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl, as al-Bukhari stated decisively in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (1/373). Abu Hatim said: "I do not think he heard from him." And Mus'ab al-Zubayri said (see "Tarikh Dimashq" 48/180): "At that time the mother of Mus'ab bin Sa'd had not yet been taken captive (i.e. he had not been born), and 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl was martyred at Ajnadayn during the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Tirmidhi (2735) declared it "defective" (ma'lul) because of Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi (Musa bin Mas'ud), since he is "weak" in hadith. He said: "'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated this hadith from Sufyan (al-Thawri), from Abu Ishaq (al-Sabi'i) as 'mursal' and did not mention Mus'ab bin Sa'd in it, and this is more correct (asahh)."
Technical note / Critique and verification: Imam al-Tirmidhi said this (that Abu Hudhayfah is weak), although Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi is not "weak" in the absolute way he stated; rather he is "hasan al-hadith" and would sometimes make mistakes in the hadith of Sufyan al-Thawri. But he did not make a mistake here, because Bishr bin Salm al-Bajali corroborated him in mentioning Mus'ab bin Sa'd (see Abu Nu'aym's "Ma'rifat al-Sahabah" 5447) and narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri exactly like the narration of Abu Hudhayfah. Likewise Isra'il bin Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i corroborated him (see Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani's "al-Muntaqa min Kitab al-Tabaqat" p. 43-44), where he narrated from his grandfather Abu Ishaq, from Mus'ab bin Sa'd, that when 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah (and he mentioned it explicitly as "mursal"). This (the narration of Isra'il) is preferable to the narration of Bishr bin Salm and Abu Hudhayfah; it is as though Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i himself would sometimes mention Mus'ab bin Sa'd and sometimes not. The presence of Mus'ab bin Sa'd in the chain is also supported by the fact that Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Rahman al-Suddi narrated part of the story of the Conquest of Makkah (in which 'Ikrimah flees and then returns and accepts Islam) from Mus'ab bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas from his father (Sa'd) (see al-Nasa'i 3516 and others). Although it does not contain the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) welcoming him or 'Ikrimah's statement about spending double in the way of Allah, it is still evidence that the mention of Mus'ab bin Sa'd has a "basis" (asl). And from this narration of al-Suddi it is learned that Mus'ab bin Sa'd heard the story of the Conquest of Makkah from his father Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. And Allah knows best. If Mus'ab bin Sa'd's hearing of this narration (under discussion) from his father is also established, the chain becomes "muttasil" (connected). And Allah knows best what is correct.
Details of the narration / Routes: Ibrahim bin Yusuf bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i also transmitted a similar narration from his father Yusuf, from his grandfather Abu Ishaq, but he said in it: "From 'Amir bin Sa'd al-Bajali that 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)..." and he mentioned it as "mursal", naming "'Amir bin Sa'd al-Bajali" in place of Mus'ab bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas. Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i's narration from 'Amir bin Sa'd al-Bajali is well known. Since Abu Ishaq narrated widely, it is not unlikely that he heard this report from both men. So by the combination of both routes and its supporting reports, this hadith is deemed "sahih". And Allah knows best.

Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "al-Ma'rifah" (5447) by way of Bishr bin Salm al-Bajali from Sufyan al-Thawri, but without mention of spending (in the way of Allah).
Reference / Source: Ibn Shabbah narrated it in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (2/498) through Mu'ammal bin Isma'il, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Ishaq, that 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl... (and he mentioned the full hadith). Likewise 'Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri (as stated in al-Tirmidhi 2735), and neither of the two (Mu'ammal and 'Abd al-Rahman) mentioned Mus'ab bin Sa'd in the chain.
Reference / Source: Abu 'Arubah al-Harrani narrated it in "al-Muntaqa min Kitab al-Tabaqat" (p. 43-44) by way of Isra'il bin Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from his grandfather Abu Ishaq, from Mus'ab bin Sa'd, that: "When 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Makkah, he said..." He mentioned it as "mursal" and at greater length than here, and Mus'ab bin Sa'd is mentioned in it.
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (5/344 and 13/37) and Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "Makarim al-Akhlaq" (202) narrated it by way of al-A'mash from Abu Ishaq, that: "When 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl accepted Islam..." but it does not mention the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) welcoming 'Ikrimah, nor does it mention Mus'ab bin Sa'd.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in "Dhayl al-Mudhayyal" (as in 'Arib's "Muntakhab" of it, appended to "Tarikh al-Tabari" 11/561), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Ma'rifah" (5448) and Ibn 'Asakir (41/53), by way of Ibrahim bin Yusuf bin Abi Ishaq, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Amir bin Sa'd al-Bajali, that: "When 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said to him..." (he narrated it similarly, with some additional wording). Its narrators are "la ba'sa bihim", but it too is "mursal". Some said in their narration "from 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl", but the correct view is that it is "mursal", because 'Amir bin Sa'd did not live in the time of 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl's statement about spending double in the way of Allah there are several "supporting reports" (shawahid), as has passed at numbers (5133) and (5134).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) welcoming 'Ikrimah, there is a supporting report in the "mursal" narration of al-Zuhri, recorded by Imam Malik (2/545) and others, that: "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw 'Ikrimah, he leapt towards him with joy, without an outer cloak on him, until he took his pledge." See also number (5132).
