Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5133

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of the Conquest of Makkah, Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl fled towards Yemen, while his wife, Umm Hakim bint al-Harith bin Hisham, had by then become a Muslim. She asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to go in search of her husband, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her permission and granted Ikrimah protection. She set out with a Roman slave of hers, who tried to seduce her; she kept putting him off until she reached some people of the tribe of Akk and asked them for help, and they tied him up. She caught up with her husband at a place in Tihamah. Ikrimah had by then boarded a boat; when he sat in it, he called upon al-Lat and al-Uzza, whereupon the boatmen said that it is not permissible here to call upon anyone besides Allah. Ikrimah thought: By Allah! If He alone is in the sea, then He alone is on the land too. I pledge that I will certainly return to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So Ikrimah returned with his wife and pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), which he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted. And when Banu Bakr were defeated, a man of Hudhayl fled back to his wife; she reproached him, and he said: "If only you had seen us at al-Khandamah, when Safwan fled and Ikrimah fled, and the swords of the Muslims were upon us, cutting off every forearm and skull, you would not have uttered a single word of reproach." Urwah says: Sayyiduna Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl (may Allah be pleased with him), of the Banu Makhzum clan of Quraysh, was martyred on the day of the Battle of Ajnadayn.

Textual correction: In our manuscripts the (name) was corrupted into "'Akkah", while in the margin of manuscript (Z) the correct form is written in a different hand, in agreement with the other sources that record the report. "'Akk" (without the final ha') is a tribe to which a district (mikhlaf) of Yemen is attributed.

Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (5/49-50 and 98) from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain, and al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (17/1020) from Muhammad bin 'Amr bin Khalid with this same chain.
Details of the narration: Similarly it is reported from Musa bin 'Uqbah from al-Zuhri as "mursal" (see al-Bayhaqi 5/39-47 and Ibn 'Asakir, "Tarikh Dimashq" 41/62). Its narrators are "thiqah", but it does not mention the story of the boat (safinah).
Reference / Source: The story of the boat on its own (mufrad) was narrated by al-Nasa'i (3516) from the hadith of Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) with a "hasan" chain. Likewise al-Tabarani (17/1019) recorded it from the "mursal" narration of Ibn Abi Mulaykah, whose narrators are "thiqah".
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir (41/65) also recorded it from the "mursal" narration of Sulayman al-Taymi, whose narrators are "thiqah".
Verification: That 'Ikrimah (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred at "Ajnadayn" is the most correct (asahh) view on this matter. Musa bin 'Uqbah agreed with 'Urwah bin al-Zubayr on this (see al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" 1/355). Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi also stated it decisively, as Ibn Sa'd quoted from him in "al-Tabaqat" (6/88). Musa bin 'Uqbah also narrated it from al-Zuhri (see "Tarikh Dimashq" 41/71). See also what comes later at number (5135).
Linguistic note / Geography: "Al-Khandamah" is the name of a mountain on the lower side of Makkah, where some people of Quraysh gathered on the day of the Conquest of Makkah to fight the Muslims. Among them were Safwan bin Umayyah, Suhayl bin 'Amr, 'Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl and others.
