It is narrated from Khalid bin Ma'dan that when the Romans were defeated on the day of Ajnadayn, they reached a narrow place through which people could only pass one by one. The Romans began fighting there (turning back), while some had already passed through it. At that point Sayyiduna Hisham bin al-As bin Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him) advanced and fought them at that spot until he was martyred. This happened at the beginning of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), in the year 13 AH.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Reference / Source: This narration is found in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (4/180) from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi with this same chain of his, and it is "mursal". Grading: However, it is established through a more "sahih" chain than this from Abu Jahm bin Hudhayfah (who is a Companion) (see Ibn al-Mubarak's "Kitab al-Jihad" 116 and "Kitab al-Zuhd" 525) that Hisham bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred at the Battle of Yarmuk. Several narrators have narrated it by way of Ibn al-Mubarak, and its chain is "sahih". Verification and preference: Likewise it is established from Hisham's brother, 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him), that his brother Hisham was martyred on the day of Yarmuk. Ibn Sa'd (4/179), al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Awsat" (1/360) and other hadith scholars narrated it with two chains, one of which is "sahih" and the other possibly "hasan". So the established position regarding the martyrdom of Hisham bin al-'As is that he was martyred at the Battle of Yarmuk. And Allah knows best.
