Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5127

Muhammad bin Umar narrates from his shaykhs that Sayyiduna Hisham bin al-As bin Wa'il bin Hashim bin Su'ayd bin Sahm (may Allah be pleased with him), whose mother was Harmalah bint Hisham bin al-Mughirah, was an early Muslim in Makkah, before his brother Amr bin al-As. He emigrated to the land of Abyssinia, and when news reached him of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) emigration to Madinah, he came back to Makkah in order to join him, but his father and his people detained him in Makkah, until he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah after the Battle of the Trench. After that he took part in all the battles. He was younger in age than his brother Amr bin al-As.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Addendum: This addition is taken from Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat" (4/178).

Textual correction: In the manuscripts the (name) was corrupted into "Hisham"; we have corrected it with the help of the sources of biographies and genealogies (al-ansab).

Verification of the name: In manuscripts (Z), (M) and (B) this name was corrupted into "Sa'd". In manuscript (S) it is vocalised "Sa'id" (with a fathah on the 'ayn), which indicates that it is the diminutive of "Sa'd" (Su'ayd). This agrees with the vocalisation given by al-Daraqutni in "al-Mu'talif wa al-Mukhtalif" (3/1188). Ibn Makula said in "al-Ikmal" (4/304): "His name is Sa'id (with a fathah on the sin and a kasrah on the 'ayn), but Quraysh used the diminutive and called him Su'ayd."
