(2). Muhammad bin Umar narrates from his shaykhs that the name of Sayyiduna Abu Kabshah (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), was Sulaym. He was born in the land of Daws. He took part with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the battles of Badr, Uhud and all the other battles. He passed away on the first day of the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), which was Tuesday, the 22nd of Jumada al-Ula, in the year 13 AH.

Reference / Source: This is in Ibn Sa'd's "al-Tabaqat al-Kubra" (3/46), narrated from Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi as his own statement, except for Abu Kabshah's name and the statement that he was "born in the land of Daws" (muwallad); Ibn Sa'd mentioned both of these as his own statement and did not attribute them to his teacher al-Waqidi. Research note: Mus'ab bin Abd Allah al-Zubayri also said the same as this statement of al-Waqidi (see: "Tarikh Dimashq" 4/98). That Abu Kabshah died on this date (the one given by al-Waqidi and others) is the view of all the other biographers who recorded the date of his death, except Khalifah (bin Khayyat), who is "alone" in saying that he died in the year 23 AH.
