Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5091

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Tha'labah bin Anamah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was seated. He gave the greeting of salam, and there was a gold ring on Tha'labah's finger. He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return his greeting. He greeted again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. Then he greeted a third time, and still he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply. So someone present there said: Tha'labah greeted you three times and you did not reply? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not see that he is splashing my face with an ember of fire that is in his hand?!" Hearing this, Tha'labah immediately threw the ring away.
Mention of the virtues of Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Malik al-Zuraqi (may Allah be pleased with him):

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: The word "fa-sallama" (so he gave the salam) had dropped out of our manuscripts; we have recorded it here on the basis of al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" and the printed edition.

Grading: Its chain is "very weak" on account of "Haram bin 'Uthman".
Criticism and praise of narrators: Al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis": "Haram is halik (a ruined narrator). I wish I knew whether the compiler (al-Hakim) had not heard the statement of Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him): 'Narrating from Haram is haram (forbidden).'"
Criticism of the text: Moreover, this hadith is "batil" (false) in terms of its text, because it mentions "wafada" (coming as a delegation), whereas he was one of the people of Madinah. Also, gold was only made forbidden at a late stage (whereas this incident seems to be early). And Allah knows best.
