It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Zubayr bin al-Awwam (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Uhud the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) presented a sword and said: "Who will take this sword with its due right?" I stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! I will. But he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the same again; I stood up again and said: O Messenger of Allah! I will. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away again. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same a third time, Sayyiduna Abu Dujanah Simak bin Kharashah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! I take it with its due right, but what is its due right? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you do not kill a Muslim with it, and that you do not flee with it from a disbeliever." The narrator says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) handed that sword to him. It was the habit of Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when he firmly intended to fight, he would tie a band around his head as a sign of it. Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said (to myself): Today I will certainly see what feats he shows. So whichever enemy came before him, he cut him down, until he reached the women at the foot of the mountain who were beating their tambourines, and one woman among them was reciting these verses: "We are the daughters of the highborn, we walk upon precious velvet cushions; if you stand firm (before the enemy), we will embrace you warmly and spread out the beds, and if you turn your backs and flee, we will part from you as one who hates parts." Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Abu Dujanah raised his sword to kill a woman, but then held back his hand. When the battle was over, I said to him: I saw all the scenes of your bravery, but I did not understand your raising the sword against the woman and then not striking her. He replied: By Allah! I honoured the sword of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) too much to kill a woman with it.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of 'Ubayd Allah bin al-Wazi'. Technical note / Criticism and praise of narrators: From him ('Ubayd Allah) narrated his grandson 'Amr bin 'Asim, Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak in his book "al-Jihad" (no. 121), and Abd al-A'la bin Muhammad al-Basri in "Juz' min Hadith Abi 'Ali al-Sawwaf" (no. 50). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", and al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi declared him "saduq" (truthful) in "al-Kashif", and he is as he said. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar erred in "al-Taqrib" by declaring him "majhul" (unknown). Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by al-Bazzar in "al-Musnad" (979), al-Dulabi in "al-Kuna wa al-Asma'" (385), al-Tabari in "Tarikh al-Umam wa al-Muluk" (2/510-511) and in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (the section on the Musnad of the ten promised Paradise, pp. 548-549), and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (3/232-233), by way of 'Amr bin 'Asim with this same chain. Note / Clarification: In al-Bazzar's narration it is stated explicitly that the woman who recited the verses mentioned was "Hind bint 'Utbah" (the wife of Abu Sufyan). Imam al-Tabari declared this narration sahih in "Tahdhib al-Athar".
