حدثنا علي بن حَمْشاذَ العَدْل، حدثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق القاضي، حدثنا محمد بن كَثير؛ وحدثنا (1) علي بن عبد العزيز، حدثنا حَجّاج بن مِنْهال، قالا: حدثنا حمّاد بن سَلَمة، عن ثابت، عن أنس: أنَّ النبي ﷺ أخذَ سيفًا يومَ أُحُدٍ وأصحابُه حولَه، فقال: "مَن يأخذُ هذا السيفَ؟ " فبَسَطُوا أيديَهم، يقولُ هذا أنا، ويقولُ هذا: أنا، فقال: "مَن يأخذه بحَقِّه؟ " فأحجَمَ القومُ، فقال سِماكٌ أبو دُجَانة: أنا آخُذُه بحَقِّه، فدفَعَه رسولُ الله ﷺ إليه، ففَلَقَ به يومئذٍ هامَ المُشركين (2).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the day of Uhud the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a sword in his hand while his Companions were gathered around him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will take this sword?" They all stretched out their hands, each one saying: I will, I will. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will take it with its due right?" At this the people held back (because of the gravity of the responsibility). Then Sayyiduna Simak Abu Dujanah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I take it with its due right. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) handed the sword to him, and with it that day he split open the heads of the polytheists.

(1) القائل "وحدثنا" هو علي بن حمشاذ.
Note / Clarification: The narrator who says "wa haddathana" (and he narrated to us) in the text is 'Ali bin Hamshadh.
(2) إسناده صحيح. ثابت: هو ابن أسلمَ البُناني، ومحمد بن كثير: هو الثقفي الصَّنْعاني ثم المصِّيصي، وربما يكون العَبْديِّ البصريَّ، فكلاهما له رواية عن حماد بن سلمة، ولكن الثقفي أشهر بالرواية عن حماد بن سلمة.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Identification of narrator: "Thabit" is Thabit bin Aslam al-Bunani. "Muhammad bin Kathir" is Muhammad bin Kathir al-Thaqafi al-San'ani (who later settled in al-Massisah). It is also possible that he is "al-'Abdi al-Basri", since both of them narrate from Hammad bin Salamah, but al-Thaqafi is better known for narrating from Hammad bin Salamah.
وأخرجه أحمد 19/ (12235)، ومسلم (2470) من طريق عفان بن مسلم، وأحمد (12235) عن يزيد بن هارون، كلاهما عن حماد بن سلمة، به.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it in "al-Musnad" (19/12235) and Imam Muslim in "Sahih Muslim" (2470) by way of 'Affan bin Muslim, and Imam Ahmad (12235) also narrated it through Yazid bin Harun. Both of these narrators ('Affan and Yazid) narrate it from Hammad bin Salamah with this same chain.
