Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 5080

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first group to enter Paradise will enter with faces shining like the moon on the fourteenth night; then after them will be those who are like the brightest shining star in the sky." Hearing this, Sayyiduna Ukkashah bin Mihsan (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah to include me among them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah! Include him among them." Then another man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah to include me among them as well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ukkashah has preceded you to it."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" on account of Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Alqamah, who is "saduq" (truthful),
Technical note / Defect ('illah): but he made a "wahm" (error) here in narrating it. He mentioned the question of 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan within the hadith about "the two groups who will be the first to enter Paradise", whereas that hadith of the two groups is a separate narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) which contains no mention of 'Ukkashah or his question. The hadith in which 'Ukkashah is mentioned is the one about the "seventy thousand" who will enter Paradise without reckoning.
Important point: Both hadiths are sahih but they are separate. It appears that Muhammad bin 'Amr bin 'Alqamah fell into error and inserted one hadith into the other (idraj).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (16/ 10524) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym in "Sifat al-Jannah" (246) narrated by way of Muhammad bin 'Uzayz al-Ayli from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A group of my Ummah will enter Paradise, seventy thousand in number, their faces like the light of the full moon." Then 'Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up (and the rest of the hadith is the same).
Grading: God willing, this chain is "hasan".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration agrees with the narration of a group of others from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and some narrations have the additional words "entering Paradise without reckoning".
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (13/ 8016 and 15/ 9883), Muslim (216) and Ibn Hibban (7244) narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Ziyad al-Jumahi; Ahmad (13/ 8017) by way of Kulayb bin Shihab; and Ahmad (14/ 8614) by way of Abu Yunus al-Misri (the freed slave of Abu Hurayrah). All three narrate it from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) with the wording: "Seventy thousand of my Ummah will enter Paradise without reckoning." Upon this 'Ukkashah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me one of them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, make him one of them." Then another man stood up and made the same request, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'Ukkashah has beaten you to it."
Grading: The first chain is sahih, the second is strong, and the third is "hasan" in corroborations (mutaba'at).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (15/ 9202), al-Bukhari (5811 and 6542) and Muslim (216) narrated it by way of al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah, with the wording: "A group from my Ummah will enter Paradise, seventy thousand of them, their faces shining like the full moon." Then 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan stood up, lifting a striped cloak that was on him, and asked the same.
Details of the narration: As for the other hadith, about "the two groups who will be the first to enter Paradise", it was narrated by: Ahmad (12/ 7152 and 16/ 10593), Muslim (2834) and Ibn Hibban (7420) by way of Muhammad bin Sirin; Ahmad (12/ 7165 and 7435), Muslim (2834) and Ibn Majah (4333 M) by way of Abu Salih al-Samman; Ahmad (12/ 7489) by way of 'Iyad bin Dinar al-Laythi; Ahmad (16/ 10122 and 10548) by way of Ziyad the freed slave of Banu Makhzum; al-Bukhari (3246) by way of Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj and (3254) by way of Abd al-Rahman bin Abi 'Amrah; and al-Bukhari (3327), Muslim (2834), Ibn Majah (4333) and Ibn Hibban (7437) by way of Abu Zur'ah bin 'Amr bin Jarir. All seven narrate it from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note: All of them have additions in the description of the two groups that are not in the author's (al-Hakim's) narration here, and none of them mentions 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan.
Reference / Source: It was narrated in abridged form (mentioning only the first group) by Ahmad (13/ 8198), al-Bukhari (3245), Muslim (2834), al-Tirmidhi (2537) and Ibn Hibban (7436) by way of Hammam bin Munabbih, and by Muslim (217) by way of Abu Yunus al-Misri; both of them narrate it from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note: Abu Yunus alone added that their number is "seventy thousand". Neither of them mentioned 'Ukkashah bin Mihsan, and Hammam's narration contains additions in the description of the first group that are not in the author's narration.
Linguistic note: The word "al-durri" means: intensely shining. It is as if it were attributed to "pearls" (al-durr), likening it to their clarity and purity.
